Forums - Gaming - Analyst: Wii Is 'Fool's Gold' For Game Investors

Another "credible" article by another "hardcore" analyst, those people will never stop publishing crap about nintendo, the good thing is not many people actually care what those "journalists" have to say, because they've got nothing in common with professional journalism.

I agree with the article.

How often do you see a hardcore non-Nintendo game on top?

Counterpoint: How often do you see hardcore non-Nintendo game?

Can't be on top if nobody's trying.

You mean like MadWorld in your sig?

How does a single example address his question which was about the frequency of titles?

Because Madworld bombed?

PSN - hanafuda

....Compared to what? Fool's gold implies that there's actual gold somewhere.

@ theRepublic:

I had heard that KZ2 was in the 30-40M range. from some other sources on the web.  Quoting the high-end estimate helps support the idea that making games on the Wii is "cheap", but I'm not sure its realistic.

In addition, why would marketing, etc. tend to cost so much more on the PS360, as opposed to the Wii?

KZ2 was in 20-30 millions range before the budget went out of control. Even if you google, any articles published after 2008 regarding KZ2 budget would tell you the budget "ballooned" to 60 millions.

Okay, say that's true -- what then causes the advertising budget of KZ2 to be $40M and the advertising budget of The Conduit to be 1/4th that -- $10M?  And the production costs, etc?

Since we're talking crossplat PS360 games, why are we bothering talking about KZ2 at all, anyway?  Its an exclusive meant to show off a console -- the return they expect would largely be in marketshare and not directly in money.  How about CoD:WaW or CoD4?  If we are going to continue talking exclusives, how about Gears 2, which supposedly only cost $10M to develop?

Not counting any work that had anything to do with the unreal engine.  (In otherwords most of the game.)

The $10 million comment was stated to show that you too could make a AAA super popular game for the mere price of $10 million if your willing to liscense the unreal engine... and have it do like half the work.

"We spent less than $10 million to make Gears of War. Somewhere between nine and ten million dollars. People are always saying that making next-generation games is really expensive, and we're saying, you should license our technology. Because we have really great tools for building content and a great pipeline that makes your team more productive..."

"In the U.S., there is a 19-million unit installed base for the Wii verses 22-million units combined for the 360 and PS3. Assuming some overlap in the 360/PS3 installed bases, they're roughly equivalent."

This is the part of his analysis I agree with the most, it's the reason why 1st Party software on the XB360/PS3 I feel is so important, cause I foresee ALOT of the games for those two platforms being shared.

The rest of his analysis however, I find fall into that old line, "If you build it, they will come..." Hardcore gamers WANT TO PLAY GREAT GAMES. RE5, or Major third party games, as I suspected he based this on, can sell on Wii, as COD:WaW has showed...and unless I'm missing something, and extra milli of sales never hurt NOBODY.

...Of course this does bring up the question of, should you Lead with the Wii, and upscale it to the HD consoles.

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

Ask yourself "If new hardcore games were coming out on the N64, would I buy myself a new N64 to play them?" Now use the GameCube in place of the N64. Now the Wii. Now the PS360.  Disregard price, when asking yourself that question.

Do you think hardcore gamers are going to tend toward owning a weaker system or a stronger one? Toward playing classics from their youth, or new games?

The Wii has a demographics slant toward casual titles, and its in no way a minor one. The "if you build it, they will come" argument is well-wishing, when the Wii doesn't even own 50%, let alone 50% of the demographics for many genres.

What do you think would happen if a casual title like Carnival Games came out on the PS360?  Would it sell millions?  If the publishers build it, will they come?

@ BOLD: To your question I say if I'm a GAMER, I'd probably own all 3 consoles already as it's EXLCUSIVES that drives gamers. I wouldn't want to miss out on owning, one console versus the other if one console has GREAT exclusives that I want. With the way the current system is set up now, a PS3/Wii would be the better choice versus owning all 3 as the 360, IMO, isn't securing enough MUST PLAY exlcusives.

@ RED: The Wii has a broad demographic, if you look at the list of the millions sellers you will notice the WIDE range of games sold. This is where the other two WANT to be. This is the reason why they are changing their focus to INCLUDE the demographic that would purchase Carnival Games, cause that would mean they are the same demo that would purchase Lips, or Singstar, or the Eyepet.

...Now ask yourself this question, as a BUSINESSMAN looking to profit wouldn't you want to have your best quality product in the hands of as many ppl as possible?

If you mean to ask "Do you acknowledge demographic segmentation between the Wii and the HD twins", yeah, I think it would be kind of hard not to. There's going to be demographic overlap, but it's pretty obvious at this point that people buy each system fo certain games, made to fit certain tastes.

Wow, 6 pages. The Wiimafia's denial must run pretty deep. Too bad everything this guy says is true..who will flop harder, Conduit or Madworld? The race is on!  Oh wait, neither was AAA, neither was 'advertised enough' and both are 'new IP' so we should expect 150k sales WW for both...

Trying to convince me the Wii is a real adult game machine 'if you play it right' is like trying to convince me Tofu tastes great 'if you just cook it right'
