Forums - Sony - Top five mistakes Sony is making with Playstation 3

@ TacoBoy49

@ mike. Imagine how many systems the PS3 would have sold if GTA4, and Resident Evil 5 if they were ttimed exclusives for Sony.

Imagine how many PS3 consoles would have been sold if Halo 3 would have been a PS3 exclusive.

Multi-platform developers will continue to support multiple platforms for as long as it makes sense to them or are provided crucial reasons not to do so. The 360 had a 1 year headstart on the market, it made sense to support it.

GTA IV development started well before there were mature PS3 development kits available. A PS3 exclusive GTA V could make sense, as Rockstar sees too many technical limitations with the 360 hardware for future games.

2. The best selling game thiss generation is Wii fit and Cod 4. No Sony game even comes close to those numbers.

IMO Wii Fit wouldn't do as well on the PS3. The balance board gaming concept originates from the 80s, produced by Amiga Corp. The Wii just had the right audience and momentum for something like this to be successful.

COD4 is on the PS3 and per user sold roughly equally as well as the 360 version did (and much better compared to the PC).

Also,, LBP was sold to millions of 25 year old adult males, not kids like Sony. Unlless kids start loving it, its a worthless IP.

Adult males likely with a family like me, my girlfriend and kid sister love it. Me and my adult male friends like the game as well.

Even if MGs4 is undertracked. It wasn't a huge system seller and that was the biggest exclusive Sony had and probably will be the biggest ever.

I think MGS4 was an important system seller, probably the most significant one so far. In general even without a cut on entry pricing PS3 sales for 2008 were up considerably worldwide. Taking equal timeframes the PS3 is still well outtracking both PS1 and 360 sales, selling over 10 million units a year at a 400 dollar/euro entry pricing.

Definately agree with 1 & 2. However, the threat of removing BC made me jump on board and buy a 60Gb PS3 before they ran out. Now I have it I'm pleased I did as it's kept me entertained with some great games but the price and lack of BC definately make it a harder sell for a lot of people.

Either way, with the recession and Sony's financial situation... what can they do right now?

Oh go on then. I can resist no longer

5. Designing it
4. Making it
3. Selling it
2. Persisting with it
1. Defending it

;-D

@ mike, your missing my point about LBP. Its purpose was to expand the audience and attract younger people. It sold to to a bunch of 25-34 year old adult males. Right now, Mario and Pokemon is selling to millions of kids like its intended to. Lbp will never be a mascot if kids don't accept it. Halo was and is accepted by kids and teens. So it is a true mascot. 30 year olds have never dictaded the direction of pop culture. The kids and teens always have. Sony fans are still stuck on Cloud from FF VII. A charachtter kids today have no idea who he is. Probably don't care about some depressed anime emo dude.

I think LittleBigPlanet was targeted at the whole family, however the PS3 itself is currently targeted at adult males. I think lots of children are actually playing LittleBigPlanet on their parents' PS3.

IMO for the PS3 to become more of a kid's bedroom type of console, IMO it needs to become a cheaper and slimmer console, which IMO will certainly be the case for the long run. How many preteens currently have a HDTV and an internet connection in their bedrooms? As HDTVs are becoming the only option in developed countries and more people will opt for wireless internet, IMO this will however increase in due time.

IMO the Wii and PS2 at this point are the best kid console options (IMO the Wii has the best games suited for this audience, the PS2 has the most and cheapest games suited for this audience). If I had kids I would buy them one of those instead at this point. The PS3 being too expensive/big and the 360 also being too big, noisy, as well as being too failure prone.

disagree with 4 & 5.

5. No it has more than 360 now
4. slow for what? it only lacks cross VOICE game chat and invite now
3. How many people are playing psone games on a ps3 when you can get then on emulators already?
2. yes very bad
1. errrh unprecedented price ? nope the 3D-O was US$700.00, CD-i was 700.00 and the apple pippin was, guess what US$600 just like the ps3, yes they al failed but i have probed that is not unprecedented. Yes this is the biggest mistake, maybe the ps3 would be only 10 million behind wii if it had not launched at US$600, but the price tag is not unprecedented, what this has probed is that sony has manged to do what other have fail to, sell a US$600 video game console and be "successful", and more importantly they are doing it at a lost and still managed to scare MS every once in a while.

LBP is too hard for kids below 7 years old. and the lvl creation tool is too complex

Nah...I don't think parents will buy thier 5-6 year old child a $699(here in AU) console...it's too expensive to be a 6 years old child toy.

Well according to Neilson your wrong about the Xbox 360. Also you just explained in great detail why blue ray is not necessary this generation, A lot of people still don't even have HD tvs. Without an HD tv, a movie or game will look no different than on a wii. They basically just alienated 70% of the population bcause of blue ray. Why pay more money for no benefits? No broadband in many cases also. That's why Xbox arcade exists. Microsoft understood they can't just market to the top 20 % of gammer elitists. The PS3 can never be mass market because they made too many fause assumptions.
False asssumption #1 Most people absolutely care about having the best best best graphics and the system to do so will win.
False assumption #2 they can make a game so beautiful that all other gammers will be shocked in awe and drop everything to get a PS3.
False assumption #3 Third party developers will follow their lead of spending $60 million on a game to max out a blue ray so that they can get similar sales numbers to Killzone 2 and Resistence 2 instead of games like Carnival games that cost $300k to make and sell over 3 million. Or even left 4 dead made on the 5 year old source engine with 4 levels that sold over 2.5 million. Sony leads the industry by example. Just not on making money
