Forums - Nintendo - Wall Street Journal: Nintendo starts to cool down

Thee Wii software droughtwillkind of end in 2 weeks,(in NA and Japan(

After another 3 weeks, consistent software will start to release more frequently for the Wii and DS, so I expect a solid rebound.

Wii
April: Excitebots/ Monster Hunter G
May: Punchout
June: The Conduit
July: Sin& Punishment 2

As I said somewhere else in this thread April 2008 saw the release of MkWii.

This list put together isn't going to do anywhere as good as MkWii did ....( all those titles put together won't sell 25% of what MkWii has sold so far).

Globally I feel the Wii will do roughly the same sales in 2009 than in 2008, Japan will be down 20-25%. Other will be even, America will be higher( a lot higher the first 9 months but I feel the holydays 2009 won't outperform holydays 2008 as the demand issue is solved and Wiis aren't so hard to find these days)...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Yes in Japan lots of things need to be done to put the Wii, at least, back in a dominating position. However they completely ignore the continued dominance of both DS hardware and software in the market which is a part of Nintendo as well. And on a global basis, the European and American markets continue to show growth both on the software and hardware side for Nintendo on DS and Wii. So it's kinda nitpicky but it is a good point that I'm sure Nintendo is taking care of.

Although there has been word that MHG's sales will give the Wii a boost; preorder sales for that game have been skyrocketing.

It would appear to be cooling down in others as well. 2nd quater 2008 averaged 180k sales. Now it is dipping into the 120s without a turnaround it will be down 500k+ sales YOY in quater 2.

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 10th Jan 2009 to 28th Mar 2009:

Console Wii
Total Others
1,840,262

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 12th Jan 2008 to 29th Mar 2008:

Console Wii
Total Others
1,359,376

As you can see, it's 35% up from the same quarter of 2008. Quite the opposite of cooling down.

WTF is this prik on about.

Japa bigger market than Europe. Has he lost his mind jheez.

I think that sentence was referring to individual markets. Europe is made of many small markets together.

However I thought that the UK had surpassed Japan, but I'm not sure about that.

The Wii got outsold in one territory for two months, during a software drought and some huge games for the competition. Stop the presses!

Wii sales in Japan for Q1 2009 are down more than 50% compared to Q1 2008. That's cooling down.

It's cooling down in Japan (due to known problems which can and will be fixed), but improving everywhere else. No reason to claim Nintendo as a whole is cooling down.

The article is about Japan.

No it's not. Check out the title:

After years of videogaming success, Nintendo Co. is beginning to look vulnerable.

And then this quote from the article:

"The usual idea is that whatever you see happening in Japan, you tend to see overseas two to three years later," said Hiroshi Kamide, an analyst at KBC Securities in Tokyo.

It's about Japan. The bit about trends in Japan being seen later elsewhere only reinforces the fact that this is Japan being talked about....

OK but if it's about Japan the title is very misleading (and I don't mean the thread title, I mean the article title).

Anyway if you're right and it's about Japan, the article isn't a big deal. Even if Japan was as big a market as it used to be, it would still be declining in terms of importance, especially due to the fast growth of the European market.

I totally agree that the title of the article is misleading.

@Hanafuda: Actually the whole article is misleading.
