Since this is coming from the horses mouth I'll assume it is true.

1. Are these studios a drain or are they profiting. I'll assume the former unless corrected with strong evidence because if they have that many employees its got to be a massive drain on their resources if every single HD publisher is losing money pretty much even with some impressive blockbuster releases I have to assume that Sony is as well at this point.

2. Is their pursuit of development excellence causing them to hire huge quantities of staff at the expense of profits. Guerilla games had in excess of 200 staff at points in Killzone 2 development and I heard that Santa Monica had two animators for every programmer and thats a lot of staff and expensive MOCAP.

1. As I recall MakingMusic setting out a while ago, SCEWWS is the most profitable part of Sony's gaming division. Think it's only San Diego that historically hasn't set the charts alight (that said, MLB 09 The Show is sitting pretty at 90 on Metacritic).

2. Please don't do a starcraft. You're coming ambiguously close to suggesting that GG was super-staffed during KZ2 development. As MakingMusic (wow, he's been useful!) has explained countless times, the vast majority of development was done by the original, moderately-staffed group before rising for the last stretch.

Edit: MakingMusic, get yo' ass in here and explain this better.

1. Their break even point = Microsoft + Nintendo for their 1st party developments alone. Remember they have canceled several announced games and im betting many unannounced games as well. Their software output doesn't seem to justify their current development base.

2. I was merely implying that they are pushing production values far into the territory of diminishing returns.

Maybe, maybe not.  Do we know for sure?  What I do know is that SONY is pumping them out so that's good for the gamer.

One thing no one can deny is that at least Sony uses their money in a way that benefits the gamer i.e. game development, even if it is not as profitable. This is in contrast with MS which spends it on marketing and Nintendo which stores it in their Scrouge like vault.../jk

It really is not debatable as to whether Sony makes the most 1st party quality games. It just is not debatable, even if you enjoy Ninty or MS games more, its still not debatable, and if you respected the gaming industry you would know that.

well that nice to hear for us gamers. more developers means most likely more games at a quicker pace.

but for shareholders i would be thinking the opposite. i would be thinking how come nintendo is selling insanely more software than you guys when you have so many developers.

As gamers, we can't do anything about the shareholders. All we can do is hope for more games, which they seem to be producing, lots of, for us. That's really all that matters.

As a public company, SONY needs to have a workable compromise between the shareholders and the consumers.  SONY needs to sell products to make money to please the stockholders, but it has to also appeal to the consumers so they will buy them so they can make money.  I don't know why I have to explain this because it's so obvious (not necessarily to you).  If SONY cannot affort to produce the games that they have and are about to, they wouldn't do it.  Besides, investing in stocks are for the long term.  This has nothing to do with Nintendo.  This is about SONY having the ability to continue to churn out these game in which being the size that they are allow them to do that.  Anything else doesn't take away what SONY has and will offer to the gamer.

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

Arrogant or not, it's simply a statement of fact and should be taken that way. The level of arrogance is just opinion

Why do people feel the need to attack Sony for every little thing they say?

They are not lying here, they are stating what is true. There is no need to for attacks or talk of sales. This is not in the "sales discussion" forum area. -.-

^This to the 5th Power!

Sony has the most "AAA" games to date. I am not saying that they sell the most, but they are more critically accliamed and are seen of higher quality then anything the competition has.

Franchises over the years that have been seen as some of the best that gaming has to offer from Sony...

ICO, Shadow of the Collosus, God of War, God of War II, Legend of Dragoon, Grand Turismo Series, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Crash Bandicoot Series, Ratchet and Clank series, Sly Cooper series, Dark Cloud Series, Jak and Daxter series, Hot Shots Golf, MLB:THe Show series, SOCOM, Wipeout, Medevil, Ape Escape series, Warhawk, Buzz series, Twisted Metal series, Patapon, Pixel Junk series, Mortorstorm series, Singstar, Resistance series, Little Big Planet, etc. And that is nowhere near capping off the list.

What does Nintendo have? Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donky Kong, Star Fox, Pokemon..... rince and repeat.

MS? Halo series, Fable series, Gears series, Forza, Banjo Kazooie series, Age series, Viva Piniata.....

Yea, but Sony's statement must be COMPLETELY FALSE....right?

I really can't believe we have got to the 6th page, about Sony basically stating a fact

After one hour of reading this thread I can say Sony has more devs than Nintendo but their games doesn't sell that good, except for GT, that's good for gamers but bad for the company.

and THAT my friend is why I feel Sony is the Best Gaming company ever!!!! They are willing to bite the bullet just to get gamers quality games.

I once read an article about how Sony might be too "Creative" for their own good. They are known to developers for never saying "NO" to unique ideas for a game. Shoot, had team ICO been working for anyone else, they would have been shut down immediately. Or Killzone, Killzone series would have been canned after the first game, never having the chance of the awesomeness that is KZ2.

They sell worse than Nintendo's, but they still are profitable. Uncharted had a budget of $20m, and it has sold over 2m copies, most of their games have sold a million or more

Its the games you don't see, get canned or forget about which counter balance the hits. Furthermore, development costs are just one piece of the pie when bringing a game to market.
