Forums - Sales - Tim Schafer: Gamers Worry Too Much About Sales. Agree or Disagree?

If his name is not  Tim Schafer, he would have much more trouble finding a publisher for Brütal Legend after Psychonauts disappointing sales.

I would only agree with him that "As long as you make a cool game that costs no money, publishers want to talk to you..."

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

If you like a specific company, you want them to do well enough to survive and make games, right?
But other then that, it's true.

I think in spirit he is correct. The quality of the title should be the first focus, not sales. Sadly, its the sales that will determine much about future titles (be they new IP or sequels) from the same developer.

Mind you it's the same for films & books so its not like this is anything new.

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Well, it is true that gamers should enjoy the games.

But it is also true if they don't sell, there will be no sequels/games of that genre/etc.
Instead, it will get put in the back on the discount rack.

And it is much the same as books or music -- authors and performers who works don't sell don't often get another chance.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Most gamer don't worry enough about sale, only a very vocal minority like the our community here, and yes this even include 'hardcore' gamers who have enjoyed gaming all their life.

In theory, yes. But sales = $$$ = possibilities for more games, so no dice, I'm afraid.

I was thinking along these lines as well. Sales often dictate whether we see sequels or not, and the more dedicated someone is to a certain game/series, the more important sales will be for them I believe.

We have to worry about sales becouse if good games don't sell we then get simplified crappy sequels or nothing at all.

I agree that Gamers care too much about sales. Who cares? did you enjoy the game? yes good. Did you dislike the game? stop playing, good.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.
