God Hand I recommend with caveats: if you don't like arcade brawlers out of the nineties, this really, really isn't for you. It lampoons the living Hell out of them.

Great suggestion, but I got burned out on Katamari after repeated marathoning at friends' places. Mind you that was several years ago, so perhaps the magic has returned by now.

I actually tried Godhand, but it just didn't grab me. I'll keep my head down about No More Heroes and Madworld, as I rather like having my head...

I have a feeling he's going to recommend Godhand. I'd recommend it as well, but your views on No More Heroes and Conker's suggests you don't like crazy perverse meta humor as much as me. Still it should be cheap. I personally recommend the Sly Cooper series. Good series of platformers with decent gameplay variety complimented by likeable characters. Each game also has a few fundamental changes that differs it from the other two. Also, they should be cheap. |
Nailed it.
I never did try the Sly Cooper games; I'll give 'em a go as soon as I find a copy (shouldn't be too hard, I'd imagine). Any particular starting place you suggest?
Fair enough! Completely fair. The game most certainly is not for everybody, particularly in its "the better you are the more fun you will have" design.
How about that Final Fantasy XII though, eh? Matsuno!

Most everybody else is going to recommend stuff you need to look into. Shadow of the Colossus, ICO, what have you. Final Fantasy XII is fantastic if you go into it with the right expectations (equipment is more important than levels, chain enemies to make more money, the characterization doesn't work like most RPGs) and has one of Matsuno's better stories. There are lots of good games. I am going to recommend a good game that is hard. It is silly, it is puerile, it is made by the folks who made Viewtiful Joe.

Oh wow... im deffinantly giving this game a try.... ty :)

Sure, why not? I've got friends I can borrow it from, and I'd love to weigh in on the "bastard child" debate. I'm in!
Oh Lord now I feel like I need to write up a guide,
"How to have fun with Final Fantasy XII"
Sounds like a good way to spend an afternoon.

I'd try to play them in order if at all possible as each game is a direct sequel and builds on gameplay mechanics and story elements from the former.
In my opinion the second one (Band of Thieves) was the best, then the first (Thievius Raccoonus) and the 3rd one (Honor Among Thieves) is a bit of a clusterfuck, but it's still decent.
First one is the most straight forward. You play entirely as Sly barring a few mini-game levels where your Murray/Bentley. The levels are a combination of linear platforming and stealth elements. Generally you work your way through each level in the order you want, then hit the boss, and onto the next world.
Second game is a little more open. You can freely play as Sly, Murray, or Bentley and the overworlds are more like sandbox areas now and there's a different upgrade system where you can buy new moves using loot you steal. Sly 2 is more diversified then it’s predecessor so you get more variety and the game has more of an emphasis on team work where as the first one had more of a lone thief feel. (Despite still being part of a team.)
Third one plays largely like the second one, but you’re trying to recruit even more team members, the new team mates generally have no play outside of their very specific missions. Story is a little more complex and has somewhat ambiguous ending. (And I’m pissed Sucker Punch is making Infamous instead of a follow-up to it.) I also feel it’s to varied, to the point where there are so many different gameplay elements that it loses touch with what made it great to begin with. It’s still a good game though, and all though it does possibly too much, it’s still moves in a semi-linear fashion so it’s not confusing or too difficult.
If you can't get them in order, Sly Cooper 2 is a good place to start. All you need to know is some organization is trying to rebuild the villian from the previous game.
EDIT: This is off-topic, but you do know EDGE gave Little King's Story a 9, right?

LKS is never off-topic; it's just permitting all the other topics to have a quick moment in the sun, because it's that generous. And yeah I heard. Also, NGamer gave it 92%.
Of course, we've all always known it was going to be awesome.
I'm a big fan of: Frequency, Amplitude, Rez, Gitaroo Man, The Red Star, Dark Cloud 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Way of the Samurai, Okami, God of War series, Sky Gunner, Devil may cry 1 & 3, ATV offroad fury series, and War of the Monsters.
I'd also recommend if you're into the genre: Sky Odyssey, and Gran Turismo 4.
