Forums - Gaming - Where will the remaining big JRPGs go? An overview.

Shouldn't Monster Hunter 3 be one of the three Wii big ones?

I would put "cheaper to develop for" as a plus for the wii games. Specifically for Shin Megami.

I wouldn't write it off for this gen. People seems to underestimate just how long this console generation will last. Even if Nintendo comes out with a new system before Sony and Microsoft the graphics will most likely be similar. I wouldn't be surprised if this gen drags out to 2012 as long as game development costs are this high.

if they ported the exact graphics they do now and spruced it up slightly I really don't see how it could cost that much. What part of developing for the PS360 costs these ungodly amounts that you are assuming?

It's usually attributed to art assets, I think. Concept art, storyboarding, high resolution textures, high-polygon game models, what have you.

That and all that coding.

I think.

But.....what if they pull a Disgaea 3?  I don't think their fanbase wants a huge jump in graphics, just a little nicer than they were.  I refuse to believe that Disgaea 3 costs udles of money to make, and it has an amazing amount of content, probably more than any Persona.

...

I dunno, Tor. I don't play Persona or Disgaea, so I can't comment. Those are just the typical reasons people assume are the cause of higher cost in most HD games.

@okr:

....yes. Yes, it really should. We missed that one pretty hard!

first of all Disgaea 3 is 2d srpg that was probably a ported ps2 game. SMT games are much more "complicated" - i mean thea are all in 3d and very polished compared to Disgaea series(at least console games, besides they already have most models, scripts, engines and textures for Disgaea since those games don't change in that department much unlike SMT games) and Atlus would probably want to make a huge jump from last gen graphics if they would consider putting SMT game on ps360 and this costs a LOT(after all development costs are 4-5 times higher compared to wii for small company like atlus that IS a huge deal) while at the same time they can make with ps2-game budget a full fledget wii title.

I think Wii is going to have Kingdom Hearts and Shin Megami Tensei.

I can see KH3 will be Wii or PS360 al FFXIII (PS3 Exclusive Japan Multi-everywhere else) and SMT and Persona staying exclusive for the PS3 as well as Suikoden VI

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

on ps360? hell yeah. considering amount of content in SMT series(eg. Persona series) i doubt Atlus would have enough money and power to pull such risky project - it's just meant to fail on ps360 considering SMT is quite niche jrpg series and resources that are needed to make a hd game.

If Gust can do it with Atelier Rorona, why can't Atlus devolop an HD game?

Most of the HD games that have come from Japan have been PS2 games with HD graphics anyway.

@Soriku: A Valkyrie Profile game will almost certainly be at least on 360, as Tri-Ace has the Infinite Undiscovery engine ready.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is most likely on Wii. RPG is right that it might be another team, however I think he takes Nomura's fanboyism too serious. He will work with whatever team he's told to work to make the game he's paid to deliver. Obviously the guy is a genius, but he still needs to earn his money. He can oversee more than one game at the same time. The big userbase and higher percentage of kids/Disney audience is the main reason for me to think it will be on Wii.

I expect an eventual SMT to be PS3 exclusive or HD-multiplat. The Persona and/or Devil's Summoner spin-offs might go to Wii, but I think that these are also more likely on PS3. Don't know, I simply see it as a PS franchise (despite the first one being on the SNES). I think they're likely to take the route Torillian posted: not too much graphical fidelity. The series' never needed the graphic-core audience anyway.

Suikoden VI is 50-50 imo. Konami hasn't been too big on Wii, but this might be an easy chance of bringing a big, but not too big franchise over with lower development costs. And I have the feeling this will simply follow Dragon Quest. (IX-Tierkreis: DS, X-VI: WIi).

Suikoden 6 and Persona 5 will probably be heading to the PS3.

KH3 is either going to be on PS3 or Wii (it depends on whether Nomura will want to see his vision for the game cheapened by placing it on the Wii) or if Square's desire for maximum profit wins the day on that.

The 360 after its failure to generate any strong sales for the JRPGs it has and with the boost the PS3 will get from having FFXIII and Versus XIII as exclusives and the fact that games like Tales of Vesperia will be heading to the PS3 with new characters, dungeons, scenarios, and blu-ray quality cinema pretty much guarantees that the 360 is pretty much going to become irrelevant for jrpgs.

I mean, sure they could moneyhat exclusivity for KH3, for example, but would Square and Disney really be happy with less than 500,000 in sales for the game? I think not. The 360 needs to stick with what most people will buy on the system ie. shooters and some ports of Western rpgs.

Nintendo's Wii is getting DQX and that is a big rpg for them to get. They are getting some big time future Tales games too. But many of the other announced jrpgs coming to Wii are from smaller, less significant developers in Japan, so no one really knows how well they will do.
