I don't think beta testing every game is necessary, I think quality control is necessary.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

I think the difference is in the attitude of the developers. With previous consoles, lack of patching necessitated rigorous quality control. With patches, quality is less important when you know you can just patch the software a few weeks/months down the road. It makes the developer lazy and can lead to premature releases. It's been a pretty common complaint of PC gamers for a while now. Those who buy the game on release complain about paying money to be a beta tester. |
Um, developers never think meh who cares if it's slightly broken, we'll make a patch later, or at least any developer worth anything would never think that. People know if you release a shitty/buggy game and we do everything we can to stop all bugs possible.
Every game has bugs, nobody is going to release one without bugs and it's silly to think that will happen. Patching is a great thing because it allows developers to go back if something is sever enough it needs patching.
There are a lot of pressures to release a game with a lot of non-crippling bugs in it, actually.
- Meeting the scheduled release date
- Beating a competing product to market
- Getting to market before a certain sales season (Xmas)
- Getting some revenue to continue development (An issue for smaller developers)
I'm sure the programmers would love to work out all the kinks before the product goes to market, but sometimes the potential benefits of a premature release (or costs of a delayed release) outweigh the PR damage from releasing a buggy product. Patching mitigates the cost of premature releases, so it's obviously an advantage to the developer.
It's also obviously an advantage to the consumer, if the consumer buys and plays the product after it's all patched up. It's the consumers who play a buggy product before it's been patched who have more mixed feelings about it (like The_vagabond7). They feel like their time and money has been wasted.

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Ever heard of Gothic 3 ???

God can't they release a single 360 game without the need for patches, just when I thought they had finally thought Bioshock was the perfect game.
This really, really fucking dissapoints me.

Anytime you rely on an external source to make your game right after purchase you've effectively put a new uneeded factor on its longevity as a self contained item and compromised the value of the product you've purchased.
