Forums - Gaming - With 6 to 7 million PS3's sold in Japan to 1 Million for the 360,

Let's go for the simplest answer to the question asked in the original post:

The Japanese install base of the 360 barely has any influence on games developed for Microsoft's console. It was like that in the past and it will remain that way until the end of the system's life. So whether the PS3 has a 3:1 advantage over the 360 in Japan, or a 6:1 advantage, or a 20:1 advantage, is irrelevant.

True, with an exception: development by smaller japanese studios who won't go through the localization efforts for the western market and could drop off the +20% costs of multiplatform development if that ratio really becomes more than 5:1.

As such, there might come into being a market of japanese-only second-tier JRPGs exclusive to the PS3, imported in the rest of the world.

Great post WereKitten. :)

All: I've shifted my posts on this topic to the thread "Why are so many people on message boards threatened by the PS3?

I would just like to ask how BTFeather found his magical "50%" rule where 50% of the sales of a hit game in Japan are to new consumers. Especially considering such a high ratio has almost never occurred ("almost" only because I'm sure there is at least one rule breaker somewhere in VG history). Have you ever thought that the success of massive franchises like FF and GT might come from their ability to sell to many different kinds of people? In other words, they sell to the existing userbase even if they are not hardcore FF/GT fans, or even fans of other parts of the genre. Why else would they be called "mainstream" franchises?

I would think that as a net result of Final Fantasy VII's launch in Japan that the install base of the PS1 doubled there.  It would be harder to determine how much FFX boosted PS2's sales because of all of the other games like GTA III and MGS 2 that released at about the same time, but I would think FFX easily accounted for 1 million PS2's being sold.

PS3 vs X360 will keep remaining a 3:1 ratio. But it dont matter since Japan is less than 10% of worldwide console market now.

And the X360 is still the RPG and J-RPG king.

MS gives them money....

For them to remain at a 3:1 ratio, PS3 and 360 sales would have to remain constant over time and with the PS3 being at 20,000 and the 360 at less than the PS2 each week that's not going to happen.

If you combine Nintendo and Sony and consider they're both Japanese companies they control 70% of worldwide console marketshare.

When Star Ocean got trounced by White Knight Chronicles it became apparent that the 360 was no JRPG king and since the PS3 and 360 get the same Western rpgs the 360 is no rpg king either.  Heck, the PC is still the king of western rpgs.

But I suppose you can:

It's absolutely reasonable to suggest that about one million PS3s will be sold in the release week of each game (GT5, FF XIII, FF Vs. XIII). I don't see what the problem is.

I agree but the problem is so far none of the three games listed has a confirmed release date. So we will never know exactly when it would happen. Could be the end of this year, next year or year 2016.

Gran Turismo 5 will be out in either November or December 2009 and Final Fantasy XIII PS3 will be released on Christmas Day in Japan which is the one year anniversary of White Knight Chronicles release there.

This is your speculation, not based on fact.

Did SE or Sony announce any confirmed date for either game? Did SE or Sony even confirm either game would be released before the end of 2009 (calendar year)?

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Am I the only one here that is wondering why this thread exists in some fantasy alternative universe where the fight for Japanese support is only being fought between the PS3 and 360?

I'd like to propose this question, lightly lifted from the OP and adjusted to fit my view on things.

"Why would Japanese developers choose to continue to heavily support the 360 and the PS3 with new exclusives in Japan?"

The PS3 is running millions of consoles behind the Wii in Japan. The entire continent is dominated by two handhelds. All three of those players are significantly cheaper to develop for than the PS3 and 360 are. So why do either of the HD consoles get any Japanese support at all?

Final Fantasy 13 and Versus going to sell tons there :P.

I wish I knew what that has to do with my quoted post. Care to explain?

@BTFeather: I agree on my question being interesting, and what's most interesting is that unlike the topic as a whole, it's rooted in reality. What your topic is doing is just painting the PS3 as some huge success and market leader when the comparison point is the only platform performing worse. You fail to realize the PS3 is in fourth place, and is closer to the 360's sales than it is to the Wii's.

the snow ball effect possible. third party likely follow since their demographic would be on the ps3.

Ahhh...the snowball effect. Let's say FF XIII comes out this Christmas. It is seen as an immediate success. Third parties use this info to start developing for PS3. 18-24 months later, games start coming out. The snowball effect will have given Christmas 2011 and onwards a lot of nice PS3 third party titles. I'm pretty sure though that would be nearing the end of the generation. At this point, the snowball effect is rather worthless if it has to start as late as Christmas 2009.

you fail from the beginning dude.
x360 sold more than 1mln in 3 years =/= fail at all
this is FU*KING huge success. 360 already doubled first xbox lifetime sales in japan and probably will end with 1.8-2.1mln LTD in japan if this is a fail then what about ps3 sales that are 3 times smaller then ps2s at the same amount of time?

people claiming that ps3 exclusive games will sell 1mln consoles must be delusional, seriously. it's not ps2 era so get over it already.

Seece wake up. Comparing MGS4 hw boost to GT is stupid. Do you compare star oceans boost to halo. Mgs sold great and pushed hw up, but GT is miles bigger. lol
