Forums - Gaming - Sony or Microsoft To Buy OnLive?

"Over the past week, news has spread like wild fire about the new "cloud" gaming service, OnLive. There has been much talk and speculation about whether the service will work, how it will work, and what this will mean for the gaming industry. Well, personally I think in theory it is a very good idea, but what will this mean for online gaming or gaming in general? Online gaming has obviously changed gaming, especially on home consoles. PC gamers have had the ability to play many, many games online since the early 90's if not before that, but home consoles did not get true fully fledged online gameplay until the original Xbox and Live service were released."

Thanks for backing me up! Yeah, the Dreamcast was the first to bring fully fledged online gameplay to the home consoles. Dreamcast was way ahead of its time. It even had an internet browser!

They don't have to sell to anyone. If this takes off Onlive can be richer than MS, there is also $ to be made by licensing out the compression software to other cloud providers.

NB: I really have my doubts about OnLive going "fully live" for quite a few years.

I know it's not quite the same but didn't Nintendo had a console that allowed checking shares\stocks online and such? I know, it's not gaming but just thought I'll throw that in.

There is a closed beta this summer. I signed up. If I get in I'll make a thread about the services (depending on if there are any NDAs or not)

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
