Forums - Sony - Recently upgraded to native 1080p HDTV. Rainbow 6 Vegas looks like crap.

It's really a case of consoles blurring the lines with PC, but it wouldn't be such a bad idea if games actually started adding output resolutions to main menu options.

Now it wouldn't actually change the native resolution as with PC, but it would give an easier option to choose between a 720p native signal and a 1080p upscaled signal, which in some cases, actually results in softer, blurrier output.

In particular, games that don't actually render at 720p natively look worse when upscaled to 1080p. Halo 3 looks way too soft at 1080p. Same with GTAIV on PS3.

IMO, just about any PS2 game upscaled to 1080p looks way too soft. 480p typically looks best, particularly those that are 480p native (god of war).

Yea, there was some issue where it would look okay in 720p, but really blurry in 1080i/p.

What you'll have to do is force the PS3 to display a max resolution of 720p.

Call me lazy, but I would rather trade it in than go through that hassle.

I know the blurriness can be a drag, but you'd trade it in rather than easily tweaking the resolution? I mean, many games run at 720p anyway so it's not like this is that big of a deal.

on the XMB (I'm citing this off the top of my head so bear with me if it's not exactly right)- Settings > Display settings > Video output settings > HDMI > Custom > and simply uncheck 1080i and 1080p. It'll then make the switch to that resolution and the screen will go blank for a few seconds before it comes back to ask you if you want to keep those settings. Lastly, it'll then ask you if you want to edit your audio settings, but you can just say no if it's already set to how you want it.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain how, but I already knew that.  It's the principle of the thing.  I shouldn't have to change my settings just to make a game play the way it should have in the first place.  I was already thinking about getting rid of it anyway.  This just sealed the deal.  I may actually keep the second one, however.  I dunno.

Keep this in mind when reading what I type...

I've been gaming longer than many of you have been alive.

Well, the way it should play is by avoiding the 1080i/p resolutions. If the game had a gamebreaking bug then that'd make sense, but something as easy as changing your resolution? Oh my...

You're right. Heck, why should I have to use a spoon to eat my cereal, it should just appear in my stomach. Why should I have to mute somebody in-game who's clearly being a jackass despite it taking just a few seconds to do?

Anyway, I personally didn't care for both games so it's not like it really matters.

Of course though, when you output a 720p signal to your 1080p TV, the TV does the upscaling instead. It's just a matter of which upscaler you prefer (and this varies from TV to TV).

My PS3/TV chooses the resolution itself and it never caused me any problems.

You'll generally not have any problems if your TV supports all the resolutions, it's just Rainbow Six: Vegas is one of the only games (if not the only game) with a problem like this.
