Now it wouldn't actually change the native resolution as with PC, but it would give an easier option to choose between a 720p native signal and a 1080p upscaled signal, which in some cases, actually results in softer, blurrier output.

In particular, games that don't actually render at 720p natively look worse when upscaled to 1080p. Halo 3 looks way too soft at 1080p. Same with GTAIV on PS3.

IMO, just about any PS2 game upscaled to 1080p looks way too soft. 480p typically looks best, particularly those that are 480p native (god of war).

Of course though, when you output a 720p signal to your 1080p TV, the TV does the upscaling instead. It's just a matter of which upscaler you prefer (and this varies from TV to TV).
