Forums - Sony - Is the PS2 the first "2 generations" console?

I am aware that some consoles have overlapped some generations, but is the PS2 the first mass produced console that stayed so long after a new geneartion of consoles? Better yet, it outsold current gen for some time and the price cut may make it repeat that trick in it's 9th or tenth year.

No. PS1 lasted 12 years.

No, the PS3 is a part of whatever the last generation was. Yes, it has lasted a long time and it is still selling, but for the most part it's dead.

It's not getting many new games and many of the new ones it does get are largely due to the Wii and PSP.

A console that is still selling simply is not dead by any part. It may lack the type of games hardcore gamers go after these days (when ignoring the huge older catalog of games), but that does not mean the current sales of the PS2 are to be ignored.

If I look at the terrible sales of some Wii games (third party that is), one may even suggest that the Wii gets some games because the PS2 is still around. PSP ports to the PS2 are just a few if you look at the catalog of games on both of them. They just get a lot of attention since a lot of them are pretty poorly ported.

NES and Super NES say hi.

Nes and super nes did still continue to sell well when their competition had releasd newer consoles. Nintendo themselves did not however. We are currently in a completely new generation that is not 100% comparable to the situation back then.

You still make a really really strong point though!

WTF x_x !!!!!!!!!!!

The Atari 2600 was reintroduced into the market in 1986 and officially discontinued on January 1, 1992. This meant that the 2600 started the second console generation and lasted half way through the fourth generation. That's 14 years and 3 generations, something that the PS2 will never accomplish.

I agree with no. Every single market leader has lasted well into the next generation. The PS2 is part of the PS2 generation and was the market leader. Like all previous market leaders it will get supported well into the Wii generation.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
