Forums - Gaming - Wii to Lose Market Share to $99 PS2, says Sony.

no chance ps2 is too old ps2 had only multisupport game, child or classics sales

How are they not competing with the Wii? the PS2 and Wii share development on a lot of titles (since they do indeed have similar capabilities) like RE4 for both, Manhunt 2 for both, Okami for both ect. Also as a value proposition the PS2 still does very well vs the next gen consoles.

Soon after the next gen launches the PS2 was still number 1 from time to time, and was consistently ahead of the 360 through a lot of last year even (worldwide). I mean look at holiday 2008, the PS2 sold a million consoles in december despite being nearly a decade old with no price drop. It also had a good number of million sellers released in 2008 (including games unique to the PS2 that continue to be made).

That the PS2 is well over 100 million now and still going strong is pretty impressive. I wouldn't be surprised to see it at 150 million before its done.

Really, other then the controller (which doesn't matter for things like music games which are a lot of the big sellers) whats the difference between the Wii and PS2? the graphics are a little better on the Wii, but I would say God of War 2 or FFXII compares to the best the Wii has to offer so thats not a huge difference. The games certainly aren't better, especially if you haven't been playing the PS2 for a decade (and so haven't yet tried the God of War games, Gran Turismo 4, Final Fantasy X ect ect)... I mean there are some advantages to the Wii, but at 99 bucks the PS2 is an easy impulse buy now.

If you're looking at family buyers without much money to spend and they see Guitar Hero and Rock Band on both the Wii and the PS2 (with the PS2 150 bucks less) do you think noone will pick the PS2?

The difference between the PS2 and the Gamecube is the PS2 won and had all the good games, the gamecube was jsut trying to clear stock.

It's funny how MS and Sony has no respect for the Wii.

I think they have plenty of respect for it.  They only want you to believe they don't.

So both of them spin the Wii out.

At least Sony aknowledged it's existence.

Substances Ballmer takes obviously make him think that if he closes his eyes and reopens them after a while, Wii will be disappeared. He still fears it's lurking under his bed or in the closet, but he tries to think to something else

Its like sony has lost faith in the PS3 to do anything so now going back to the PS2.

""You see Next gen didn't start because we didn't say so ....so back to the PS2! WE WIN HA HA!""

From a technological standpoint, the Wii is much closer to the PS2 than it is to* the next-gen consoles*

When is this argument gonna end? Wii much more powerfull than the PS2 end of story http://revoeyes.blogspot.com/2007/07/wii-has-more-power-than-you-think.html red the bolded part

Its like going from a Hyundai Accent to a Toyota Corolla, sure there is a little more horsepower but they're still FAR more similar then either of those and a corvette or BMW 7 series.

The Wii may be more powerful then the last gen, but it remains true that it is MUCH closer to a last gen console then the multi processor consoles of this generation with a whole lot more horsepower then the Wii has.  At best you can say its a jump to a half gen higher like moving from the Saturn to the Dreamcast, but it is in no way powerful enough that any HD developed game can be easily ported to it.

Wii to Lose Market Share to $99 PS2, says Sony

GameDaily BIZ just got off the phone with John Koller, Director of Hardware Marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, to discuss the news of PS2 dropping down to just $99. And of course, we had to talk about PS3 NOT getting a price drop as well...

BIZ: I think a number of industry pundits were expecting a PS3 price drop today in addition to or instead of the PS2 price cut. With the fiscal year having just ended, we thought Sony might kick off the new year with a bang... So my question is why not PS3 right now? And for the PS2, was this move already pre-planned long ago?

John Koller: So, I'll take the last question first. We do plan price cuts and most major moves well in advance; they're done for a variety of reasons. This particular reason on the PS2 price cut was done really to extend the overall viability and versatility of the platform. We're looking at 70-80 titles launching on PS2 this coming year, and about the same number next year in 2010. PS2 shows very little signs of slowing down, and we wanted to continue to really target that lower income consumer, as well as that lapsed gamer or young family consumer that is still purchasing PS2 and wants some of that evergreen entertainment – the social gaming and sports are what they are particularly gravitating towards. A lot of the development is going in that direction.

"We do look at those as similar consumers. So, yes, we do think the $99 price point could steal some share [from Wii]. From a technological standpoint, the Wii is much closer to the PS2 than it is to the next-gen consoles."

In terms of the PS3, our is on the versatility of the system and the overall value that's inherent to the system. We've been focusing on development of key software franchises, and this year should be the best software year launched yet. On PS3, we look at that as a significant advantage versus Xbox 360. In particular, our first party group has really stepped up with some tremendous franchises, whether they're iterations [of existing properties] or new IP like LittleBigPlanet, MAG, etc. You also look at the continued strength of the Blu-ray format and we're starting to see some cases where movies are helping to sell hardware - Dark Knight certainly did for a time in December. So we're seeing different patterns of growth. Last year was the best sales year ever for PS3 and we are very bullish on the platform this year.

The GameCube was twice as powerful than the PS2 and the Wii is four times as powerful than the PS2. Sony is so screwed up with their statistics it's not even funny. The PS2 is still slowly dwindling in its sales, so I wonder why Sony is putting on a front when they know that the Wii and DS are causing their systems to die off. The PS2 is already way ahead in sales and is last generation hardware. It cannot compare to this generation's technology. Mock me all you want, but everyone knows damn right that Sony is quaking in fear for their loss in marketshare (for their gaming consoles) and finances (still bleeding red and now word of them breaking even on sales).

Whatever happened to modesty.

Looking back at the past 12 years, Sony never had any.......
