Would you mind explaining this? I wasn't aware that there was any particularly deep theme running through MGS4 - I thought it was all kind of right there on the surface, but I would be gladly corrected.

I wouldn't know where to begin really. It is just too much to write on this subject. I can however recommend you a good read which, while only scratching the surface, it is fairly well written and presented.
So try the MGS4 Complete Official Guide. It is a good start, as it has a general analysis of MGS4's story and overall MG universe in the light of MGS4's revelations, but i should recommend using the book only as a matter of confronting it with one's own conclusions and not as a means to quickly learn the intended meaning.
"You have the right to the remains of a silent attorney"
Wait, why would I need to read that? I know the story of it, I'm just asking what philosophical depth there is.

Oh I got it, I got just how bad it is. As I said, there were (suposedly 10 hours, I didn't ad them myself), and I read Watchmen in 8 hours. Respectively MGS4 wasted 8 more hours of my life than it should have. Hence the story is quite a minus.
This post reminds me of that thread that the gy made about how The Dark Knight was ripping off MGS4. He was quite serious too.

3D Mario game. Super Mario 64 was more fun and IMO better than Super Mario Galaxy. The Wii motion control kills the game for me. 2D Mario is way better than 3D Mario.
MGS 4 well that would have to win by default. Great video game movie with awesome CGI cut scenes in it.
I would like to have a seen a X360 exclusive game thrown in to make it a three way fight over which game is best on current generation console systems.

I'm just gonna say what comes to my mind it might not hold valid with you:
The Patriots in general can be seen as world actors that are outside of mans direct influence. There is no "patriots" entity at the point that this game takes place, it is simply a system that they left behind which has evolved into something that most people accept as reality.
The war economy in general is an amazing. A world where patriotic nationalism and multilateralism have been replaced by new constitutional actors in the form of PMC's. War is fought for the sake of fighting wars. In other words, there is absolutley nothing starting or stopping wars because of the immense amount of wealth that can be gained.
Old man reaching the end of his life after decades of strife is faced with the decision of wiping out his own kind. Returning to shadow moses after ten years to see the place the way you left it...
and my class is done I will hopefully return let me know what you think if you read this though.
That's a very good summary, but they pretty much tell you every single word of that at least once apiece throughout the game. It's a summary of the plot, not a treatise of philosophical concepts intrinsic to the narrative.
Thank you for taking the time to explain it to me.
