your rant fails because you failed to mention that Emil is the worst video game character ever.

Wrong. That title belongs to Colette from ToS.

collete may have been anoying, but she pales in comparison to Emil. Also, you don't have to deal with Collete throughout the entire game, unlike Emil who you can't get rid of

Come on guys. Emil isn't THAT bad. I actually liked him. =O Haha.

he's bad if you have mastered the game and realize that Marta is a crap ton stronger in the end than emil's hickery smoked ass with ridiculously quick ground combos and instant casts making her immortal with tech 3 armors. oh and her special heals the entire party while doing crazy dmg to EVERYTHING in the circle of the battle.

It picks up, but still does alot of extremely annoying things. The monster catching is ridiculously simplistic and really only serves to allow them to only give you two new main characters and fill the rest in with ToS characters that can be switched in and out. I also grew annoyed with Emil's infatuation with that badass type character who he meets in the beginning. Had so many flashbacks with that guy as the main focus I thought Emil and him were going to end up together in the end.

In the end, it does enough things to make up for the faults to a point and bring itself up to an average game.

not to mention that those ToS characters are useless in Mania Mode in the harder hidden dungeons because they don't level up at all and mobs can 2 hit them which is really stupid. really, why would i use them when my monsters hit for 9k and can teleport across the battle field or use specials that cover the entire battle field in 1 sweep?

But...that'sonly for hidden dungeons (and there's only 2). Otherwise they're good. Not nearly as good as the monsters but still (btw...believe it or not the monsters do fit in the story).

My Ravenous can hit 35,000-50,000+ with its Bloody Howling spell btw (it's lvl 200 with 9999 A ATK lol) :P

I only use fast hitting combo mobs so it takes too long to keep evolving to max attack power and there really isn't any reason to with marta divine saber spamming everything to death.

oh and yes it's 35k+ when VS skill is working.

edit: they(ToS chars) are pretty useless all the way during mania mode and stands 0 chance in the 2 dungeons.

@Words of Wisdom & MANUELF - Vyse is awesome - one of my fav RPG heroes. His attitude is what made him so great. He was an optimist, never gave up, and motivated the team whenever they need motivating.

Even still, I like Emil in the first half hour I've played. I know eventually he'll have more backbone... right!? Even if he doesn't, it's cool with me.

Actually, the game doesn't get much better with time. Emil is still annoying as hell until the end of the game. The pokemon monster catching thing is retarded. The plot is also rather ridiculous and has little to do with that of the original game. I think it a worse spinoff than FFX-2 was.

LOL, did you really just say that? DotNW fits perfectly with the original ToS story and it fills in the holes between ToS and ToP.

The game does get much better with time. Emil gets a lot less annoying, plus Ratatosk Emil balances out any annoyingness he may have.

Emil is a more realistic main character than a lot of others.

The tutorial I thought was good...oh, and a cool scene comes up soon.

Emil wasn't realistic. His situation was entirely exaggerated and no one is that spineless.

Exactly, no one would follow someone so spineless. Your leader character should have something draws the rest of the cast to follow him/her throughout their journey. Whether it be their physcial ability, mental acquity, or just plain Charisma a lead needs something. Emil has nothing. Pity only goes so far. No one would take that much abuse without standing up for themselves at some point.

Characters like Emil are why we use the term "main character" and no longer use the term "hero" when talking about the RPG protagonist.

Personally, I'd rather play a game starring a "hero" than a "main character."

Then you should really play Tales of Vesperia. I think your going to like Yuri Lowell.

you know you can turn off voice acting in skits, i'm pretty sure.

No, I like the VA during skits, but I dislike the VA in Symphonia as a whole. That part of my post was kind of confusing now that I read it again.

Well I liked the VAs in SYMPHONIA.  I thought they were well suited to their roles and showed enthusiasm.  That said, I do think DotNW ups the standards a tad; even though Emil's VA is initially whimpy, his Ratatosk VA cancels that out, and as I said, Marta is great from the start, as is Tenebrae.  As for the replacement characters, I didn't find them that bad, and I was at least glad they kept Heather Hogan, Cam Clarke, and Tara Strong.

So I'm sorry but the voice work in SYMPHONIA is NOT bad at all.  I think it's quite good for a JRPG.  If you want a JRPG with REALLY bad voice acting check out Baten Kaitos--that was plain lifeless compared to Symphonia's VA.

What I felt about Symphonia's voice acting: it sounded terrible, it sounded like the actors were just reading the lines without knowing the context(perhaps not even seeing the game on screen). As the game progressed they started to fit into their characters much better, and the lines worked better. The actors themselves weren't bad, except for Collette who was terrible the whole way through.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Sorry but Collette's VA is NOT bad at all.  She's supposed to sound sweet and innocent, and I thought Heather Hogan did a great job of conveying that aspect without sounding overly saccharine.  And I've heard far worse voice acting than this one; if there were any so called moments that sounded like "line reading", it wasn't noticeable to me at all, because I was pleased with the results overall.  The sequel's VAs are just as good, if not better, than the original.

It's a difference of opinion, no need to emphasize yours over mine. For me, she did sound terrible, unbelievable and hard to empathize with for that reason for the entire game.

Well I had no problems with her in the least, so I guess I beg to differ.
