We get one of these every month it seems. But yes the Wii will sell more, aligned sales show Wii tracking way higher than it..It is also tracking higher than the DS which will also surpass the PS2 before long.



Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:


If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

The Wii still has untapped potential:
No price drop
No new colors
No refresh (if there is like DS > DSL > DSi)
Not all 1st party games (Kirby, a Wii exclusive Zelda) have been released
No Wii-Motion plus yet (not sure if this will help or not)

I think Wii will win and I hope it wins (go Nintendo!) but hey time will tell.

It's kinda ridiculous how well the Wii is selling right now but I understand why it's selling and it's selling faster than the PS2 ever did so it's got a very high chance to beat it by the end of it's life time. kinda insane.

Ah now don't be rash.... it will have """"shipped"""" that number before the end of this year.... Sales we will never truly know because that shipped figure is flawed.

Best we have beside VGC is tallying up other trackers.

If I could be bothered I would PM BKK2... but from memory:

NPD USA - ~43 million
NPD Canada - ~3 million? (I am not certain on this at all)
Mexico - ~2 million

Combined totals from GfK of UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Benelux ~ 32 million (the VGC totals for this seem to be overtracked for PS2)

Japan (Famitsu/MC etc are relatively similar) ~22 million

Comes to a total of 102 million. (by the same regions VGC comes to about 110 million)

If Nintendo drops support for the Wii when they move onto their next system then the PS2 will win. Otherwise the record will be broken.

So we're comparing Wii sales figures minus a bit with PS2 shipment figures plus several million?

Wii will still win, it's currently trending about 209 million ahead of the PS2 on aligned launch

Are you basing this off sales and how the Wii doing now? Or just basing it off of what you want to happen?

Because they way Wii's sales are now, there's no doubt it will sell more.

hmmm..... That's a tough question and I don't we can really answer it until we see how well the Wii sells this year. I do think the Wii will pass it by a small amount, but I'm not really sure. 130 million is a lot. even for the Wii. The Wii will have to average 25 million a year through part of 2012 to do that. It's possible yes, but not certain.

 



Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

The key in the PS2 success was his amazing longevity. It kept selling for years even after the next gen had started.

The real question is, can the Wii keep it's momentum for another five years ?

Frankly, I don't think the fad will last as long as it did with the PS2. My prediction is that Nintendo will come up short by 20-30 millions units.
