Forums - Gaming - PS2 or 360 offline?

@twesterm, garnett and anyone else attempting to argue that the 360 is a more reasonable choice for the OP.

You have to take into account that...

1. The OP already has a Wii and a PC (for "shooters").
2. The OP seems to have missed out ENTIRELY on the PS2 catalog
3. The OP prefers to play RPGs and adventure games.
4. The OP does not plan to play online (or download games)
5. The OP does not have a HDTV.

Even if it's true that the PS2 "doesn't have a future", it doesn't make sense to pick the 360 over the PS2 given the hints from the OP. It's a choice between a library of cheaper classic proven games that cater to the OP's taste vs a more expensive option for a library of upcomming potential hits that for the most part would rather be played on the PC.

I'm going to combine both yours and garnett's replies to make things quick.

  • The OP has already stated his PC cannot play any of the shooters alson on the 360. 360 has more than shooters,it has a diverse game section.
Regardless, it's clear that if the OP were to play shooters in the first place, it would be on the Wii or PC. If there was a must have shooter that the OP was waiting for, he likely would have said it already. Either way, the OP has already stated that RPGs and adventures are more important. The 360 does have a diverse selection, but the RPG and adventure selection isn't even close.
  • Valid point, but like I said, when he buys the PS2 he's trapped.  He will have the Wii either way, but he won't get any of the other new games.Games that are on PS2  are being made for Wii,new ones at least.
He's trapped with what? some of the greatest RPG and action adventure games of all time that he's never experienced before? The Wii does have some great PS2 titles such as RE4, Okami, etc. But we all know there are a ton of RPGs and action adventure games that won't be remade.

  • The 360 has those.  Not as many as the PS2 but how many do you really need?  Also, unlike the PS2, the 360 is going to continue getting those.
No one is saying that the 360 doesn't, but it's clear that the PS2 has a bigger and better selection. It doesn't make any sense to ask "how much do you really need?" if the guy asks for the best choice. There's absolutely no way that large selection would hurt the OP.
  • But he will have the option to in the future should he decide.  Also, the 360 can be played and had much fun with offline. but he can update his games, and download free addons which you cannot do with the PS2.
That's true, but the guy clearly states that he doesn't plan to go online or download titles. You're making him pay for something he doesn't want, it's pretty irrelevant. It's like attempting to sell bluray movie playback fuction to consumers that just want a solid gaming experience, but has no interest in movies. Also, he made it clear he want's to know what a better offline console is. Any online function is irrelevant in terms of the OP's critera unless he stated otherwise.
  • And he also said he plans to buy one in 2010. .You dont need an HDTV to enjoy better graphics.
Then why not wait to buy a xbox360 in 2010 when the price may be cheaper and the selection of titles would be even more robust? Point is, he's asking the question now and he apparently prioritize games ahead of graphics.

And I'm not trying to say there is one absolute choice.  Given that this thread has so many replies it's obviously not an easy choice because both are going to offer lots of pros and cons.

The OP asked a question and we're just stating why we think he should or shouldn't get a system.

Right, and based of the information I've gathered.... I'm simply stating what I think is the logical choice for him. See?We're on the same boat.

I realize the PS2 has an excellent library but in my honest opinion, that excellent library is not worth missing out on the existing 360 library and future library along with not having the option of taking advantage of any future upgrades he may or may not take.

I disagree. I know the 360 has a fantastic library. But I really don't consider the current xbox360 selection to be even close to the PS2's, especially in terms of RPGs and adventure games. I also don't think the potential of the 360 will outstrip the already proven library of the PS2. He will get much more bang for his buck with the PS2 based on what he's asking for. The only difference (as the OP stated) is graphics, which is not as important as games.

And forgive me if I missed this, but did he say he would rather play 360/PC games on the PC or are you putting words into his mouth?  Not everyone sees PC as the best platform (and I would assume he doesn't since he said he doesn't have a gaming PC).

Well, i believed you "missed it" then. I never stated that the OP would RATHER play 360 titles on the PC, I stated that the OP would likely rather play shooters on the PC. Since the OP said that he already has both his Wii and his PC as options for shooter genre games, I take it that it's simply what he prefers.

One more thing.

I'm not trying to stuff anything down the OP's throat or anyone elses. I'm also not trying to make the 360 look bad or say it's not a good system with good games. If that's how people view me then I'm sorry, but I'm simply trying to help the OP make what I believe is the best decision. I just don't think the positives and arguments in favor of the 360 matches up to the PS2 based on what the OP has stated. The last thing I want this to turn into is an argument over which console is shittier than the other, rather than which console is better for the OP.

To the OP:

I think of it this way: If the PS2 and the 360 both stopped having games released tomorrow, which console would I choose? If just the PS2 stops tomorrow, how long will it take the 360 to catch up to the overall diversity and quality of the PS2 library, for the genres I like? Will my situation be different then? Will the XBox 720 be out? Will I want a PS3 then? A Wii HD?

In your shoes... I'd get a PS2, and hold my cards with a nextgen purchase, until the PS2 bores me (which mine still hasn't, and eBay, GameStop, etc. make for plenty good places to shop for used titles).  If Sony drops the price tomorrow, heck -- buy both?

Well it certainly isn't future proof, as it'll be 'obsolute' in a mere 3 years or so, as the PS2 aparently is now. If the games are new to him, they're new.

Why isn't it fair for that comparsion? It's what is available to him now. Sure we can project what the 360 may get down the line, but regardless, it's highly unlikely that'll reach the amount of quality games the PS2 has. Plus, in a few years time, which would be required to play much of the PS2's quality library, the 360 will be much cheaper as will many of its current library.

I agree with you, the 360 does have some great RPG's and adventure games. Only difference is the money you'd spend on buying 1 good RPG on the 360 could buy you 3-4 great ones on PS2.

I understand the argument that many would feel that the games would seem outdated, but as he mentioned before he doesn't care much for top of the line graphics anyhow.

No new games will stop being made in about 4-5 years,PS2 will be DEAD,No new pS2 games will be coming out by 2010 or even mid 09.

He will eventually get a HDTV and go online gaming,so 360 is perfect, and even if he dosetn care about graphcis so what it helps the game,ie better draw distance.

Its up to the OP,Does he want future proof Xbox 360 with good selection of games and new AAA games being made everyday,or PS2 system with cheap RPG and no new AAA games being made.

You're right, no new games will be coming out. But would you not agree that the PS2 has enough of a back catalog to easily last 2 years plus (along with playing the Wii)? But all the games are already new to him. Being *brand* new is nothing more than novelty.

He chose a Wii as his main console of choice. I won't speak for him, but it would lead one to think that draw distance is of little concern.

Both have a good selection of games. The PS2, however, seems to match his wants more. Both have plenty of new games for him, whether they be made in 2003 or 2009, they are new to him.

I'm not sure why people are dwelling on the fact that the PS2 has no future. If it will provide him with countless hours of gameplay, what difference does it matter? Honestly, what's the difference between a 2009 AAA game and a 2003 AAA game you've never played before? Hype? Graphics? Secondly, it can be provided at a significantly lower cost. To add to that, by the times he's finished with the PS2, the 360 is likely to be much cheaper as well as a more exapnsive, cheaper library.

Anyhow, I think I'm done here. It feels strange without anymore of the OP's input.

Wow, this is my longest thread by far...
Thanks everyone for your ideas which have been extremely helpful.

When I started this thread, I just had realized (you know, planning my budget) that I could, if wanted, buy me a 360 by the begining of the summer and maybe forget about the PS2. But I still had my doubts.

If you haven't played none of the games of ps2 or 360, is a difficult call.

About the future of the PS2 I think we all agree that the machine will be dead pretty soon. But It has NOW easyly more than 20 long AAA games rated with more than 90% in metacritics. Games that REALLY interest me in the genres of action, adventure, racing, RPG, etc. Let's say it takes me like two weeks to finish/get tired of each game (I don't have plenty of time to play), so I think I will be alright until, lets say... summer of 2010.
By then, the 360 may be cheaper and better... Final Fantasy XIII may be out by then. So we will see then what happens...

I like a couple of games on the 360, like Mass Effect and Fable II and shooters like Gears of Wars. But they will be there next year... Luckyly I may get me an HD too, so maybe by chritsmas of 2010 it will be a good time for the 360 and a HD TV.

The argument of the future of the 360 is not bad, but RIGHT NOW, the PS2 has better games FOR ME. Actually, I bought the Wii thinking of the future (BIG MISTAKE SO FAR), comparing it with the PS2, so I thought it would eventually have great games, BUT IT IS TAKING SO LONG THAT IT MAY NEVER HAPPEN. To lesser extent, same thing goes for the 360, lets give it one more year and see what happens...

So the winner is... PS2!

Choosing the PS2 now doesn't mean excluding the 360 in a not so distant future. But if I decide to buy the 360, I am afraid I will never get a PS2...

360? It will still be a great machine in the summer of 2010... HD TV's may be cheaper, RRods may be gone for good (one can dream) and more adventure, action RPGs games would be available for it...

THANKS EVERYONE!

LOL You read 10 pages to decide on your console. wait for a lower price PS2. Go play some PS2 and 360 games then decide. How many games you gonna buy?

360....you get to play the new games that are coming out.

PREDICTIONS:
(Predicted on 5/31/11) END of 2011 Sales - Xbox 360 = 62M;  PS3 = 59M;  Wii = 97M

Now that you're getting a PS2, get:

-God of War 1+2
-Shadow of The Colossus
-MGS3
-Gran Turismo 3 or 4
-Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal
-One of the Jak games, or two, or three.

etc.

Ignore people that claim that PS2 games are magically unenjoyable because it's from the previous generation. I play PS2 games all the time and they're as much fun as ever. The best time to buy a console is late in its lifespan when its cheap and there are tonnes of games to choose from. Now is as good a time as any to buy the best system ever. Until the 360 gets action games that match God of War, stealth games that match Metal Gear Solid 3, action/adventure games that match Okami, JRPs that match Dragon Quest VIII, etc... I'd say that the PS2 has the most to offer. Finally, the claims that the 360 will continue to get great games for years may not be true. If the original Xbox is any indicator then the 360 will get dropped like a hot potato once the Xbox Trinity is released.

Actally the only reason the xbox was dropped like a hot potato is because M$ had a pricing dispute with Nvidia and no longer could produce the xbox. Thats the only reason it stopped. Not because M$ wanted to

good, you picked the logical choice. Maybe the 360 will be cheaper by the time you decide to get it along with a HDTV, but for now, you got some AAA RPGs and adventure games to tear through.

I suggest Shadow of the Collossus,God of War and FF10 as your first PS2 games. For action RPGs, you may want to test out Kingdom Hearts 1&2. Becareful though, after you play SoTC, GoW or KH, there's a good chance you'll end up loving the game and craving a follow up.... which in turn may cause you to get a PS3 instead of a 360 in the future.
