Forums - Gaming - Yes I know it is 2009 but how do you prefer your JRPGs? 2D or 3D?

I can't imagine a game as beautiful as Odin's Sphere costing much to make either.

I could take games that look like that for the rest of my life and I will be a very happy gamer.

Actually, HD spritework is almost absurdly expensive, probably the most expensive kind of art in games. It's the biggest reason why Muramasa is coming to the Wii instead of the HD twins, believe it or not.

I agree, though, that that style of game is almost achingly beautiful. Odin Sphere is one of last generation's real delights.

Wow, I had absolutely no idea.

I wonder what a game like Odin's Sphere cost to make.

Not as much as you would think - keep in mind, lower resolutions means less detail necessary for the spritework. Odin Sphere probably wasn't very expensive, but once you scale those sprites to be in 720p it starts to grow geometrically.

For me, a vivid artistic style is one of the most important aspects of a game. Gameplay is still key, but it is the look the game that gives a player his first, lasting impression.

Personally, I'm a fan of animated films, and I give a lot of thought to the differences between hand-drawn animation and video-game animation, and how to bring out the best of both worlds.

I don't have a real preference between 2D and 3D games. One absolutely gorgeous 2D game is the PS1 title, Legend of Mana, but new techniques and technologies have done wonders for the expressive capabilities of 3D games, and while the effort involved is much greater, the results can be equally great. The new Prince of Persia is a good example, as is Valkyria Chronicles.

The game looks absolutely stunning on my PS3 when it upscales. No need for them to overboard where it isn't needed.

3d..no contest, although there is nothing wrong with 2d rpgs. Golden Sun was great.

Not a 360 fanboy, just a PS3 fanboy hater that likes putting them in their place ^.^

I care more about length and replay value, tbh.

I guess I would say 2D PS1 era style.

I prefer 2D. Just has a certain charm, like B&W film.
