Forums - Gaming - Yes I know it is 2009 but how do you prefer your JRPGs? 2D or 3D?

I like both, and I prefer a distinct anime style. For which in 3D's case cell shading seems the best realisation.
Though when they go fully 3D, I prefer a toned down anime style and slightly more ralism. E.g. SO4's style is less appealing to me than Infinite Undiscovery, WKC etc.

I think Muramasa/Odin Sphere are still considered sprites - just larger and more detailed. In that aspect, however much I love Disgaea 3, I was a bit disappointed that they went with fairly low-res sprites.

I'm assuming you mean 2D sprites and not actually 2D RPGs like Paper Mario and Odin Sphere/Muramusa. Anyhoos, I'm going to go with sprites. I feel the style holds up better over the years and that gets more and more obvious as FF VI continues to look ok while I don't even think Traveller's Tales could do a better job making Lego Final Fantasy VII than Square already did in '97.

@Bolded #1

Yes, that was more of what I was aiming at.

I don't know exactly what it is but I just find games like those much more charming.

Something about this

does so much more for me than something like this

@ Bolded #2.

I 100% agree. To this day I could easily go back and replay FFVI, for a 3D game like FFVII I just can't do the same.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

I think they are as well, not 100% sure and yes it would be nice to have games like Disgaea 4 (hoping for this game) to have beefed up sprites that resemble a style similar to Odins Sphere. I have always hoped for a Xenogears remake where the sprites are beefed up to resemble a style like this.

I still find Odin's Sphere to be one of the more impressive looking games this gen.

I can't imagine a game as beautiful as Odin's Sphere costing much to make either.

I could take games that look like that for the rest of my life and I will be a very happy gamer.

a mixture really

ppl say disgaea 3 has ps2 era grafix thats not the case as the game looks fantastic and was made that way.

x-edge is similar it looks good and i cant wait for it.

I don't think that counts as a mixture. I think that's straight 2D.

sorry was in rush didnt finish post.

both 2d and 3d as long as game is good.

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

Don't care. I play JRPGs for a compelling story and good battle system.

Although I slightly favour 2D, tbh.

Actually, HD spritework is almost absurdly expensive, probably the most expensive kind of art in games. It's the biggest reason why Muramasa is coming to the Wii instead of the HD twins, believe it or not.

I agree, though, that that style of game is almost achingly beautiful. Odin Sphere is one of last generation's real delights.

I agree with this.
2D just seems much more polished compared to 3D. So I find the story telling to be more immersive.
It also usually plays much faster, running around towns and all.
