Forums - Nintendo - Describe your ultimate Pokemon game

In blaydcor's thread, "Pokemon: My reflections on why the series is no longer fun", I speculated what my ultimate Pokemon game would be like.

Pokemon was huge for me when I was younger. I watched the series, I collected the cards and I played the games. For a while at least. But this was all back in the day when there only 151 pokemon, 8 badges and one league, and with addition of more pokemon, I couldn't help but feel that the series was getting milked, and that the games were more rehashes of the old ones than actual new entries. In other words, the novelty wore off.

So I got thinking, what would my ultimate Pokemon game be like? And this is what I came up with:

It should take place on the original continent only. There is only 151 pokemons, 8 badges and one league. It should be a completely new story, and while still revolving around the good old "recieve pokemon, win badges, beat league/rival", it should have some more depth, make a good story for it.

The game should be released on the Wii, and be seen in third person. The fighting system should be upgraded, but only in a way that shows the "we know we are in the 7th generation of consoles, and that the gameplay can be improved", and not necessarily a completely new system.

The game should be filled with options for exploration, and you should be throwing pokeballs with the motioncontrols.

This would be my kind of pokemon game, I think it's a bit like the Street Fighter IV actually. Remove all the shit that has cropped up over the years, and give us the essence of what is great about the series.

This would be so awesome...

Like the real pokemon games (go to gyms and get badges), but on console of course in a 3D enviroment.

And its all online where people that goes on are all pokemon trainers. Everybody starts off with 1 of like say a selected 20 random pokemons. And of course its up to you to find and catch more and battle others online etc. Maybe once u collected all 8 badges (btw gym battles are all really tough unlike in the gameboy games) you get the choice to move to a different continent to get a new set of 8 badges etc.

and once in a random while or if nintendo posts it somewhere online on a certain day, a legendary pokemon can be found and if your skilled enough you can catch it.

Pokemon platinum is pretty perfect, imo.

One addition that they could have added to make it better would be a fully customizable trainer though. That would be cool.

I would like a return to the red/blue pokemon era as well. Definitely a revamped combat system on the wii. Otherwise, not sure.

I'll answer in parts.

Firstly, do not put it on a console. Half the point of Pokemon is that it's portable and encourages playing with friends in person. Do not put it on a console.

Either an MMO with the same mechanics as the handheld games, or a real time battle system where you give commands to your pokemon without controlling them directly, but it would require pokemon to not have a limited moveset. (thus making it more like the show, whether it's 3D or 2D isn't too important).

I'm not going to play the same but updated game again, I've had my fill.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

gold/silver were the best IMO. The night/day thing and day of the week things were awesome. I liked the 151 pokemon more, but gold/silver wasn't so bad. So how many are they up to now? 666?

The original 151 pokemons, 16 badges, day/night, better animations in battles, tons of optional sidequests and locations, updated sounds and music. DS or Wii, doesn't matter, as long as it's in 3D. The story is fine, no need of something complex.

That would be an ideal Pokemon game to me.

I partially agree with you. If you couldn't meet up and trade, etc. it wouldn't be quite the same.

But for those of us who don't do much in that, the promise of a full 3D Pokemon experience on any home console is enough to outweigh your reasons. And online play, or the ability to save information to your controller, means that, while it certainly isn't the same, there is still a social part to it.
