You should have just predicted a price cut announcement at E3 2009.... There is no need for Nintendo to release a HD console yet. They will probably wait at least 3-5 more years. Why change strategies right now when that ball is in their court.

| Sky Render said: @LHWB You seem to have missed the point: the Wii has no need for any sort of "upgrade", it's selling quite well as it is. And any upgrade it will receive, as per Blue Ocean Strategy, will be geared towards getting more non-gamers into the mix, not towards claiming a bigger share of the incumbent market. |
They may want the incumbent market back, having pissed it off.
The two NOT being mutually exclusive. WITH proper focus and allocation.
AARGH! What is with this Wii HD nonsense? It would be one of the worst moves Nintendo could ever make.
What do you think the Wii HD is?
If you think it is a completely new console, you are wrong. Nintendo is never the first to release new hardware, why would they bring out a new console now?
If you think it is exactly as powerful as the Wii, but displays in 1080p then it would not be powerful enough to play most games. It could probably manage Wii Sports, but it wouldn't play Galaxy, Brawl Kart etc
If you think it is merely upscaling to 1080p, then wtf, it would make very little difference, and would require a bit of an upgrade to the hardware
If it is more powerful, but runs the same games, then the graphics would look better, but then you would be required to provide code of the Wii version and the Wii HD version, effectively halving the storage space of a Wii disk, and increasing cost of development (ie 3rd parties wouldn't do it, and 1st parties would no longer be profitable)
Please explain yourself - why would Nintendo do something so stupid? And if you say that you are predicting it because Pachter has been, then I will cry.
| Loud_Hot_White_Box said: It would be REALLY smart for Nintendo to launch Wii HD now. They'd put out a box that's HD-ready, perhaps as powerful as 360 and could still be $250. Keep the Wiimotes, all the peripherals still work, and everything keeps going just as it was. They'd take a hit in their net profit per console for now, but they'd add 6 years of viability to Wii right now, when Wii is at its apex, and they'd steal PS360's graphical thunder. WiiHD could still see the flood of casual titles, but additionally a number of higher-powered offerings. The key would be to treat it like PSP-3000. This isn't a new console; it isn't Wii 2. It's just that Wii now supports HD, and some future HD games may not work with older units. This is basically the SAME thing they did with DSi. It would work. |
No, releasing a Wii HD would slash the market and create major riots, old ladies would burn their wii balance boards and myamoto would REALLY be kidnapped... by our grand-fathers!
Wii-HD WOULD be a new console, change Wii to PS1 and Wii-HD to PS2, now you may understand why IT WOULD BE ANOTHER CONSOLE. It would be a new console with backwards compatibility, sony used it a long time ago, you know? So early, it would only confuse the market.
DSi-only games will be those that use the cameras, it's a niche inside the whole DS+DSi software, it's a new "peripheral" in it's own sense . Just like the Wii-balance board creates it's own niche. I am SURE that most of the 3rd-parties will use the DS-slot, bigger install base.
If Nintendo ever releases Wii-HD this year, 3rd-parties will still create HD-less games: it has a huge install base and is cheaper to develop. Wii-HD would die from inside.
Also, what would you think if you spent a whole year trying to buy that pretty new and sexy game-machine (aka "wii" for the non-HC) and... They released a new one!?!?! (it's not like you can buy a new one and give the old to your little sister)

Not gonna happen.
You mention you think something special is going on with the Wii. There is. It is called Motion Plus.

I actually didn't know that about the DSi; I thought it was a forgone conclusion that we'd be seeing a significant new set of games for it.
As for the last question, 1) well, maybe most games would still be non-HD as you've said, and 2) better than buying a console that doesn't seem to have as many core games as you'd have liked.
In part though, when I said it would be "smart", I meant largely "awesome for us", the gamers. Yes, the sophisticated ones. No, not the new Blue Ocean casualties, or not as much anyway.
Wii HD announcement at E3 2011 you would be on the money.
I say the Wii HD announcement is two years away.
so 3 years after the most successful console maybe ever, you announce the successor?
how long did they milk gba for?
no wii hd
good thing i have 360 and wii
@Scottie who asked "What do you think the Wii is?"
I think it is the same Wii that we've had since 2006 with maybe a harddrive inside (but probably not now that they've done the SD thing) but definitely with the ability to output games at least at the 720p resolution. Pretty much as DS Lite and Gameboy Sps were to Gameboys and Ds'.s
I don't think it's Wii2.
Heavens to Murgatoids.
I'll bet you a gillion dollars that you're wrong.
