GDC 2009: RUMOR: Infinity Ward Drop Call of Duty from Modern Warfare 2 According to Keighley

So Keighley’s Gears 2 type megaton game was revealed to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and, as much as we’re looking forward to it, it was a whimper. But hey, as long as it keep the momentum of Call of Duty 4, thats fine, except it wont be keeping one thing: the Call of Duty title.

It was somewhat bewildering that there was no Call of Duty title at the end of the trailer, just Modern Warfare 2 at the end of the trailer, so, where is it? Well according to, guess who, Geoff Keighley, it’s gone motherfuckers!

There can be no doubt! But apparently it’s not CALL OF DUTY. Just “Modern Warfare 2.”

So, whats the story here, is Call of Duty dropped from all Infinity Ward games now? Or is Modern Warfare a strong enough game to warrant its own series away from Call of Duty? Well, we do know one thing, there may not be a Call of Duty come November 10th when it’s release for PS3 and 360.

It's less confusing anyways and CoD4 made a big enough name for it that it can probably live without the Call of Duty tag.

Why drop the COD when that is where the money is and recognition? Might be a mistake on their part...

Im not buying it anymore ! Do you know how long i would stare at the label of the disc cover ?! MONTHS!!

I remember one of the CoD4 devs seemed annoyed that Treyarch pretty much gave a WWII mod to their game and passed it off as their own. Could that have something to do with the change?

This then means Call of Duty is reserved for WWII titles, and Modern Warfare is the modern war. Not a big deal. I believe Red Alert got spun off in this manner also, from the C&C line. Originally Red Alert fit into the C&C universe.

Seems a strange decision as the COD franchise was just that. Gonna have me a game of COD4 or gonna have me a game of MW2. Dunno COD just sits right, but hell some idiot decided to call a console PISS sorry Wii and it sold OK.

If we name the next GTA.....Vice City....without putting GTA in the title....it won't sell as much
