You are right. I don't think people should be dependent on any one thing, any one person, any one emotion, to be happy. If you are fulfilled as a person, you shouldn't need those things to be happy.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Thank god I hate beef and love pork. I do miss lamb though, but I don't eat too much lamb anyhow.

^You know in this study pork is considered red meat, apparently nutritionally it's more like red than white.

@Kasz: regarding the point you made about people eating less red meat being generally more health conscious. Considering they claim that this is a high quality study, you'd hope they adjusted for variables like this, but you never know without looking at the paper directly.

I've also heard pork is much more unhealthy than red meat. Supposedly, pigs can't sweat out toxins like other mammals and they absorb those toxins in their bodies in higher concentrations. They're more fattening, and they'll eat virtually anything.

Not trying to put pork down, just some random musings.

Person 2:  No.
Person 1: Forget it. I'm not buying it.
Person 2: Wait! It's amazing! Unique, charming, drop dead gorgeous... Hello?

I love red meat, but I eat it thrice a week. My main diet is usually chicken and stuff.

Back when they found that one incident of mad cow I believe the FDA checked under 1% of cows. Since then do you know what has changed in the regulations? Nothing. Do the math.

You're kinda missing their point here. Just because you don't want to give a source of joy up doesn't necessarily mean you're dependent on that one thing.
Let's say you are a "fullfilled" person. You have a loving wife, beautiful kids, Landed the job of your dreams and have a lot of good friends. Then suddenly researchers made a study saying that staying with your wife reduces your lifespan by 10 years because of stress, compared to single men without a family. What are you gonna do divorce your wife so you don't have to ever see her again? That's the least stress with marriage you can get. Or we can take the same analogy with steak that you don't have to stop cold turkey but eat it sparringly, like only meeting your wife on Saturdays, parties and the occasional Thursday. Eventhough you have other sources of happiness would you really do that?

Also, I use to go to a Chinese temple where everyone was a vegetarian (not as extreme as vegans) and their teens still have break outs and people still die at age 59 from strokes. And I also have a uncle who can eat a whole baby pig(like once a month), 2 legs if its a grown pig, 64 years old now and doesn't even have hyperlipidemia.
