Forums - Gaming - Japanese People Are (Less Interested) In Video Games

With the way sales have been in that region, I could have told them that..

Japanese People Are Less Interested In Video Games

Japan's Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association polled over one thousand individuals between the ages of 3 and 79 about the declining interest in video games.

The number of those that consider themselves gamers dropped 30.3 percent between 2007 and 2008. If that percentage is expanded Japan's national population, that's a decrease of 6 million gamers.

Only 1 in 3 polled (29.4 percent) stated that they regularly play games on their home video game console. When asked why the majority weren't gaming, the most common reply was "I'm not interested in video games." So while 45.4 of non-regular gamers stated they were not interested in video games, another 45.2 percent of non-gamers stated that there were other things they wanted or wanted to do.

Ironic, since IMO they make the best games in the long run.

there is nothing wrong with that.

I think in many ways, the interest in gaming that Japanese companies have keeps the core of gaming alive. I wonder what kind of business decisions would be made if Japan companies just didn't care about gaming anymore and dropped out. I really think it would be a sad, one sided progression of games. Most all games would seem alike and eventually would just turn into a sideshow for some other planned product. It's hard to imagine the full extent, but it would be a much sadder world for gamers.

ooh they polled 1,000 people. Fancy. Considering theres 127 million people in Japan, 1,000 people means nothing.

Totally disagreed. Japanese are more interested in games than any other country haha. Their "gaming" awareness stretches quite far throughout their culture. That's why they can have hosts of games open with large numbers while most other regions games sell over time.

Gaming is a part of their culture and probably always will be. Sure it's not doing as hot right now as it was 2-3 years ago, but they are still one of the few countries that has regular game opening of over 100,000.

Go poll 1,000,000 Japanese people then show me the results...

I agree that gaming is part of their culture, Zucas. I just hope you're right about their interest in it not waning.  Every culture changes eventually and has a process to that change.  How big is Baseball to the USA today versus 90 yrs ago?  But would you say that Baseball isn't a part of American culture?

this saddens me...

EDIT: THey only polled 1000???

Pointless...
