Forums - Sales - Sega talks about their actual state. Core games at risk

Yeah the Day1 director was telling me that the average video game cost 20 million dollars to make. As others have said the real problem is that games are costing too much and not getting enough back. Japanese companies once used to sustain themselves just by the home front, this is no longer the case which is why we see this push to try to get the west into their games.

They either need to find a cheaper way to produce high quality games or they need to cut back on certain aspects in order to cut cost.

Companies need to do a better job of making games for everyone.

95% of gamers don't know they are noobs, the 5% who do won't be noobs for long

If I remember correctly, Wanat said that casual games do make money, he was talking about making gamers games. The words he used specifically though were "games that end with a 'z'".

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

i expect the Iphone to get most of the support, they are the cheapest to develop for. Monkey ball sold 600k, amazing.

You laugh, but in a couple of years this isn't going to be very funny.

I don't have a solution for how to get people to keep buying games. I mean, lots of people use the Wii. I don't think it would be that big a problem.

As to the developers keeping up the arms race anyway?

Then they're damned, and Heaven help them.

I know lots of people enjoy the Wii, I'm one of them.  I was just wondering how 360 and PS3 users would react if their games started to look like Wii games.

Assuming that lots of 360 and PS3 games started to look like Wii games, wouldn't one game looking like Killzone 2 make a huge splash, sell lots of copies, and make a ton of money for that developer?  In that case, that developer would not be damned, they would be whatever is the opposite of damned.  Wouldn't that restart the graphics race?

PC - Borderlands 2 (2012)
PC - Deep Rock Galactic (2020)

The way I see it, in the economic climate we're describing, the MAD theory comes into play - if you bring out the nukes, everybody brings out the nukes, and we're all dead. You don't want to do that! If the arms race starts back up, we are back to the eleventh hour.

Oh. My apologies, that was rude of me.

I guess it's already not very funny.

I think Sega really should focus on not making such terrible games. That could really help sales.

....The past few Sonic games notwithstanding (and even those in terms of sales), Sega has been having a Hell of a past couple of years.

Isn't this how the industry has always been. The "hardcore" games as they call it have always been hit or miss. Why should this generation be any different.

Game Studio A makes game A and sells 3 million copies. Game Studio A sees the success of game A and then makes game B that cost 2-3 times more and struggles to sell even 1/3 of game A. Game Studio A makes a few decent games (game C, D, E, F) that makes slight profit. Game studio A then grows some balls and makes game G which has the same result as game B. Game Studio falls in Epic debt and makes game H but is too late to be saved even with great sales. Game Studio B then laughs at Midway... I mean Game Studio A.

It is the way of the world. Even video games are not impervious to failing.

FootballFan - "GT has never been bigger than Halo. Now do a comparison between the two attach ratios and watch GT get stomped by Halo. Reach will sell 5 million more than GT5. Quote me on it."
