Forums - Sony - How big of a difference would a Slim PS3 make?

Thought I saw DMJ say that RSX went 45mm in February?

I.E. the cost would kill them.

That comment doesn't make any sense?

The reason of a Slim is because all the components in the PS3 has been shrunk down quite drastically which means less heat and a smaller cooling system, which makes everything in the PS3 much cheaper to produce.

A few months ago we found out that the PS3 is losing roughly $40 on every 80GB PS3, when both the RSX and the Cell goes 45 nm the PS3 will definitely be making Sony money.

A Slim PS3 basically means Sonys making money again.

@ Xxain, really!? well we may see the Slim earlier then I thought

yeah rsx should be smaller now. i know the cell went down in the fall and i think thats when they said they wanted the rsx down in april. i want to see the casing for it.

It would reduce costs and anyway redesigning something to exploit components shrink is a lot less costly than the initial project and it repays fast with reduced costs.

Amongst other things, MS redesigned XB360 mobo several times without going bankrupt, instead this solved big problems first and reduced costs after.

Redesigning the case and other parts would cost quite little and it would be recovered very fast by lower warehousing and shipping costs.

if i were sony id drop the price with it so they would make a small profit i know they need money but they also need to get consoles in homes to sell games which would make devs happier and publishers. with the small profit theyd be making theyd be able to stay a float make investors more comfortable and regain some control of their business

would make massive difference although they dont need to actually go slim it could be the same size outer case with lesser iniards.

i know they are going 45mm later this year so i can deffo see a cheap entry level machine coming soon, alongside a premium priced console.

what ever happens sony must not drop the price of ps3 untill it manufacures a console to let it do so.

it will loose market share but thats the way it goes sometimes, there beaten on price hands down. so for the time being they should just concentrate on bringing out great games for everyone to play. and work on cheaper manufacturing costs in the background.

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

skeeuk - the reason theyd shrink the casing would be to lower cost for materials. less plastic equals less money

keep it fat for this year, slim it next with a price drop. come out with a AAA game the next week following the slim / price drop. you got yourself a ballgame.

I would buy a slim one right away!
