Forums - Gaming Discussion - why are xbox 360 sales low in japan?

the japs seem to always reject American consoles?

they are very into video games

Americans seem to embrace japanese video games and most countries don't seem to care where they come from as long as they like the game

why is this, are the japanese still pissed off about Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

or what is it

You make it sound like there are countless generations of successful American consoles, all of which rejected by the Japanese.

The 360 sells a lot better since it started offering them some games they are interested in, and tons better than the first xbox.

^but then this gen got all jrpg and people prefer ps3.

the only way microsoft sell a console in japan would be getting all the games exclusive.

either way, japanese people would get nintendo or sony version instead.

and less 2% failure rate for japanese consoles its nice.

Ithink because most of them intend to buy one console (or maybe 2)and wii and PS3 deliver what they want (Games+relaibilty).

Patriotism, games and brand.

1. They like more japanese consoles.
2. Xbox have been only about shooters, which doesn't turn japanese ppl on. (Now theres some jRPGs too.)
3. MS is quite new player on console market compared to other two companies.

true .. i hated the first xbox because the lack of the games that i want but the 360 have all the games that i want .. except for MGS & Ratchet & clank new games.

Imagine this scenario...

A Japanese console maker in current times (last ten years) sold a console in America that only had jRPGs and anime-themed games, with little to no exception. It probably wouldn't do that well at all. The next generation, the same Japanese company really starts trying to deliver on the FPS front in America. After a while, few would notice but it would still be difficult for people to accept the fact that there are more FPS games.

In Japan, it's pretty much the case with FPSs and Anime games reversed. 360 does much better than the Xbox because ithe console is at least catering to the Japanese audience.

Why the preferences? That's a whole another discussion that deals with general cultural views and attitudes.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

I'm surprised no one was outraged by the clearly racist OP...

The reason why the Xbox isn't selling as well is because it's seen more as a hardcore system for "otakus". Not all Japanese people are interested in obscure anime, JRPGs, and other genres (such as SO4 or Idol Master).

If you look at the commercials for the PS3 in Japan, you'll clearly see the image Sony projects and the audience they try to go for, (I think someone posted them in the thread "Did Sony forget how to market as the underdog?").

"The Japs"? What the Hell is this, 1944?

Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

Could you be more culturally insensitive if you tried?

@FinalEvangelion: How do you manage to pigeonhole Western culture as badly as the OP pigeonholes the Japanese? It is breathtaking.

The Japan is games. Everybody knows that.
