Forums - Sales - Could Latin America ever be a Fourth Big Region?

Nowadays we have 3 big regions for gaming industry that respond for the biggest piece of the market, Japan, NA and EU. Those regions are able to make million sellers, sell millions of consoles, are big software producers and etc. Latin America people could ever dream with the day our market will be considered a fourth region?

Sony is expanding to here, 360 is officially here for more than 3 years now(brazil) and Nintendo have plans, many publishers are contacting local companies to publish their games here and some are opening studios, and our governement looks to be opening eye for the market we could be.

daqui a 200 anos talvez...

as long as console games here are sold for (at least) $100 dollars I doubt, and anyway we all know that people would buy a pirated game for $5 even if the legal copy is sold for $10. doesn't help the fact that PC, PS2, Wii, X360, PSP and DS are all easily hacked...

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

Not before the rest of Asia does.

Although with Japan being less than half the size of the growing N.A and EU markets Asia should perhaps be included with it.

North America will remain the largest market this generation, but Europe should surpass it next gen (I mean Europe rather than "other")

It will take time, but eventually the whole world will be a viable market.... although some obscure regions will on occasion be a generation, or at least a few years behind (like Europe once was)

Actually isn't the MegaDrive still being produced and shipped in some South American countries?

First things first. Europe should be a region on its own and not lumped together with Australia and other unworthy markets.

With consoles costing over US$1000? Very very difficult

Altough PS2 sold 8m on Brazil alone so...

That cheap PS2/iPhone hybrid? Seriously that thing may knock off Apple Pippin out of his throne.

I have family in Peru and friends in Venezuela, and they all have the latest consoles available at a premium of course, however they do not mind paying more for the consoles than we do in the States. Why?? Because they make up their losses in software. The pirate industry is huge in Latin America, with the latest games available for $3 to $5 tops.

The console companies don't do much about it, because at the end the market share of those coutries is so small compared with the US, Japan, and Europe, that it's just not worth the effort.

I guess you were joking, but I don't think it will take quite that long.... look how fast Europe evolved, and although other markets will be hindered due to not being quite as rich as Europe, they will not take proportionally as long compared to wealth becaus videogames were still a growing medium Worldwide when Europe was behind. Now things are fairly established so things will be quicker.

I would guess South America could be as large as Japan is now if we give it 10-15 years, and in 25 years could be as big as North America is now.

Eventually we will reach a point where the size of the videogame market in a specific continent is relative to it's population, though that could be over 100 years for Africa.... taking Africa out it could arguably be under 50 years.
