Forums - Gaming - Is this the worst console generation?

I think this is one of the better console generations for a few simple reasons, the diversity of strategy in each of the big companies-

The way Nintendo is defining gaming based on their new control and the way they market

The way MS is spending big money on exclusives, an earlier release, and a good and easy dev kit on top of a monthly paid service

The way Sony came out with their 10 year plan while offering the best value for the money you spend on it.

This is the most diverse generation yet, while we already know Nintendo is the winner of this generation already, it was an interesting battle of wits in between the companies and gaming will now change drastically after what Nintendo has proved with the Wii thus making the following generation much more interesting now, I for one really want to see what happens next now due to this generation so I hardly think it's the worst one at all.

Ive' been loving it so far.

Nope. Best generation yet. Too many good games to play.

Games that are 'revolutionary' are in the eye of the beholder. I look at Fallout 3 with VATs, the WiiMote (and associated games), Mass Effect, and others and think this generation has been very good to us. Oh, and it has a few more years left in it.

I don't think that the PS2/Xbox generation really did anything 'new' versus the N64/PS1 generation, which saw the 2D/3D transition which was huge. You can make your Halo citations, but I'd point back to it's ripoff of Goldeneye.

What is revolutionary? Is it a new transition to a medium that leaves previous methods obsolete? We've had a bit of that with downloadable games and the WiiMote this generation, coupled with far more robust online services. Gaming wise, there has been a lot of great stuff this gen - more emphasis on co-op, great storytelling, HD, and all kinds of other stuff. Not to mention the huge push for multi-plat games which have brought most consoles games that they may not have seen a generation or two ago.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I'm not a fan of the Wii but ps3 is pretty awesome and i'm not a 360 fan so 2-1 i'd sadly agree but i love the ps3 and think it isn't a bad system i think its the better of the other competitors in my opinion

you need to understand that when looking at a subjective point of view, it's not about which company makes the better hardware, but what the developers decide to make for these systems as a gaming platform since it's main function is to play games. If you are a gamer of certain genres only, 1 console might be better than the other while a gamer that plays every genre would most likely have all 3 on top of their PC. good games will be good games regardless of how they are graphically, the multimedia aspect is only a bonus to those without a decent computer, which is rare these days if you can afford a console from one of the big 3. also, the Wii has already proved that you don't need all those extra things to perform well in the gaming market, so it's hard to judge on what's better in the real world these days.

Well I'm just lookin at the system in general.

360 games are pretty much the same as PS3

Wii has more of the older games just re done. Like Mario, Zelda, etc.

The PS3 has what the 360 don't a blu ray player and the online don't cost anything.

I was just stating that, in my opinion, the only good system now is the PS3

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion and I don't plan to try to talk anybody out of it or shut them down for something they like/dislike

nope this is my favorite gen so far

Long Live SHIO!

This gen is great. We're getting hit with awesome titles left and right.

I remember back in 2007, people were saying "There's no way 2008 can compete with this!", what with SMG, MP3, Uncharted, Halo 3, Bioshock, etc., but 2008 turned out to be even better, with MGS4, LittleBigPlanet, SSBB, MKWii, DMC4, GTAIV, NGII, Gears 2, etc.

2009 is looking to be awesome as well. It started out strong with Killzone 2, and looks to continue that strength throughout the year. It won't match up to 2008, but it'll do well.

I think you are talking about the names with the Wii titles from Nintendo, not the game play themselves, while Zelda belongs to the redone catagory since it's pretty much OoT(even then I played it for 80 hours with little sleep because it's just that addicting, and boy did it control well) the main Mario game is never really the same across different Nintendo platforms, Metroid Prime was a trilogy that started with GC and Wii ending the last one so it's also a new game, and it's also done very well with the Wii control. I'm not a huge fan of SSBB, Mario Kart is still the racer with the most fun on the market so even if I want to nit-pick about it, I can't do much.

As far as original IP goes, all the consoles are all looking pretty good in the future atm, and with a lot of devs now switching more focus to the Wii due to the sheer number of Wii around the world, it's probably going to grow quiet large in the next 2 years. In the end, it won't be about power or features, but the amount of total consoles sold in the years to come due to the pure interest of the games that are made for the consoles, just like how the PS2 was the weakest last gen yet it's the most popular.

Been gaming for 30+ years and am loving this gen.
As for "playing games through just once and never going back to them", I have to say I have never gone back to revisit so many games, so often as I have this gen and that is totally down to achievements. They have stretched the shelf life of my games way beyond expectations and that=value for money.

Playing: Borderlands(great co-op,HUGE amount of content),Too Human(better late than never lol),Saints Row 3(Penetrator ftw),Minecraft 360,Harry Potter Lego.

Patiently waiting for:  Tomb Raider, Borderlands 2
