Forums - Sony - Sony halting PS3 Supply to South Korea

Hey.. that's what I do... Go to England.. pick up some cheap stuff and then go back to the Netherlands... Can't blame Sony for doing that.. when your losing money you don't want to lose any more..

I'ts about time too.
Sad thing for Japanese gamers on a budget, and for the South Koreans I suppose.
I wonder how this will affect PS3 sales in Japan?
I'm also glad they didn't just hike the S.Korean price to "match" the Japanese price...It would have been easier

Dunno if this is wise to be honest....

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Why didn't they do like Nintendo in the UK (raising prices)?

Are PS3 sales so bad in Korea that they think raising prices would make them irrelevant?

Sorry but that's rather stupid. If they increased prices, some Koreans would still be able to get a PS3. Now they can't unless they import (which will cost even more due to shipping and currency conversion).

If anything they're doing this because they're greedy.

This smells more like discontinuing the PS3 in Korea due to bad sales which don't allow them to raise prices.

I'm highly skeptical that this is true. When Asian currencies depreciated against the Yen before SCE Asia increased the price of the PS3. Why wouldn't they do the same again instead of halting supply? It makes no sense.

However, South Korea and Japan use different voltage frequencies with the nominal voltage for South Korea being 220/380 and being 100/200 for Japan. Those picking up a Korean PS3 for Japan will need a converter.

This is completely false, PS3 has a universal PSU, it works on all voltages without a "converter". Korean PS3 is exactly the same as Japanese PS3, which is why none of this makes any sense.

It makes sense if PS3 hardware and/or software sales were too low to justify supporting the PS3 in Korea. I guess the 10-year lifecycle has already been broken in Korea if this is true.

As for your second point, is that the case for all the PS3 models? If you are right the article makes even more sense, since it means Japanese don't need to spend money on a converter, making a Korean PS3 look even cheaper.

hold on...Aren't PS3's made in S.Korea?

edit: my mistake - it appears to be Foxconn in Taiwan
