Forums - Gaming - Why the PlayStation brand name is the strongest brand name in video games

Adobo said:
nah, more and more consumers are becoming more aware about other brands now a days. To me, Sony is becoming the most expensive brand not the strongest brand.

I totally agree Sony's is not anywhere as good as it used to be and even when it was at its best in the gaming industry nintendo toped it everytime......for example for sony, go buy sony headphones for ur psp

nintendo, sure use ur ipod headphones on ur dsi.....see what i mean..sony is about greedy they only want money while nintendo is quality.....and the strongest brand name

Look, this totally depends on which region of the world ur talking about. In my country, middle & low class people usually don't know that any other thing besides a playstation exists.I once took a spoilt DS to some1 to see if I could sell the parts.he asked "is it a PS?" instead of "is it a game?".When we watched Spiderman 3 @ school, one scene was so awesome that guys thought "they definitely didn't act that. They used CGI".Unfortunately, what they said was "they used PS3 graphics" as they didn't know what CGI was.But its not like that everywhere.

Agree here depends on regions.

well if u did ask for more then have a look at this:

http://www.millwardbrown.com/sites/optimor/Media/Pdfs/en/BrandZ/BrandZ-2009-Report.pdf

scroll down to the list of the top 100 most valuable brands.....where Nintendo places 32nd most valuable brand and sony doesn't even make it in top 100....also nintendo is the 2nd most valuable in Japan after toyota....

scroll down even more to the section on gaming consoles page 24....there beside the article is the list of most valuable consoles to date...as you can see NINTENDO CLAIM THE FIRST 2 SPOTS. Nintendo DS is the strongest brand with a worth of 9659 Million and Wii comes in at second at 8256 Million....Even the 360 tops the ps3.....and ps3 is on;y worth 341 million dollars.....for many of u talking abt playsation 2 well gameboy tops it hell even the orginal xbox tops the playstation 2 brand.....

so this argument is over NINTENDO IS THE CLEAR WINNER HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, but I don't trust any report where the Xbox beats the PS2. You know, the console that outsold it 5:1.

just cause xbox got outsold doesn't mean that its not more valuable...hello even in my guidance class, the police officer that came by asked us who plays wii or xbox or computer games...u see no playstation but yes wii and xbox....

It's what you want to hear or see depending on what you are arguing for or against. When I talk to people about games or consoles they are mentioned by name. I've heard people say I'm going to play my Wii, Xbox, PS, etc...

There is no doubt that PS is highly recognized, but it seems like you are putting it on a pedistal.

Well, the "Xbox" brand name, as you just pointed out, includes the 360. Also, anecdotal evidence for the win! I've never met a person who has played a game who hasn't heard of the PS2.

the scary part is while the Wii is by far the strongest console on the market, the PlayStation does still have a stronger brand name. I still hear "I;m going to play my PlayStation." I never really hear another console in that phrase. Its either PlayStation or just Video Games.

My bet is because Nintendo changes up the name of its consoles every couple gens. First it was Nintendo/Super Nintendo, then N64, then Gamecube and now Wii.

On the other side Sony has always named their consoles Playstation.

I think if Nintendo sticks with the Wii for a couple more generations like Wii 2, Wii 3, etc then Wii will be a much stronger name.

I've never experienced anybody calling anything other than a PlayStation, a PlayStation. I do often hear people saying "I'm going to play Wii/Xbox/360". I do remember a time, however, when "PlayStation" was a generic term for a console. Those days have passed. Of course, those were the days of Sony's 80% marketshare, so you would expect PlayStation to be the dominant brand name in gaming.

Nowadays, the generic term is sometimes "PlayStation" and sometimes "Xbox". Never "Wii", for the very good reason that the average non-gamer can tell the difference between a Wii and an HD console, and for the better reason that the Wii is very different from the other two.

Cliché on someone that is not for Nintendo.

Here is mine: I never used "playstation " as generic term because playstation don't come before Nintendo, I don't use playstation because they are just good at copying.I don't use xbox360(even if i would way better prefer a 360 to a ps3)because microsoft are not honnest on the computer market.

You're might be right but Nintendo is at least original by changing at every gen.

That's because PS1/PS2/NES were all successes.

If the PS3 were a massive flop, you could be sure Sony wouldn't call their next system the PS4.

I think Nintendo will call their next system "Wii2" or "Super Wii," or "Wii HD," or something along those lines to build on the success that they have made with the Wii.
