BladeOfGod uses Wikipedia as proof, the opinion is void

He was only using it to show that Nintendo is a 'company'. Which is true. But it's also a brand.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Wikipedia is editable. "PlayStation" could be edited on Wikipedia to show it as a "company" too.

Are you really going to argue that Nintendo is not a company though...

Wikipedia is fine for some purposes, you shouldn't treat it like a definitive source but for things like this, I think it's ok.

I'm not going to argue that, but Wikipedia is not a way to get proof, though.

@BladeOfGod: You got me with the Deutsche Bank.

One thing you're right, the brand familiarity/strength is changing all the time. But where you really are off, is how you can compare them. I guess you're not that old since you're going only 15 years back in your brand comparision. You know, there are people that don't know what Playstation is, but are very familiar with Nintendo, like my mother, who purchased videogames for her kids before Playstation was even born, but not after. You can't cherrypick a specific timeframe and ignore everything outside it. You also can't base it on "fairness", since being fair has nothing to do with this. Is it fair that China is the most populated country in the world? No, but that's just a fact that exists. Is it fair that Nintendo made videogame consoles 20 before Sony? No, but that's just a fact that exists.

Brand familiarity and loyalty is about how well known the brand is (i put these two in the same category for them being too close to each other).
Brand image is about how the brand is perceived by people.
Brand strength is about how strongly the brand is related into its trade.

For example, Sony is well known brand in electronics, but due to variety of its product lines, it's not a strong brand in many areas, therefore it's better for them to brand their products instead; Walkman, Bravia, Playstation. Some products are still sold under the Sony brand.

Nintendo isn't as well known brand as Sony (or atleast shouldn't be), but is much strongly related into videogames, just like Playstation is instead of Sony.

When someone says "Sony", you know the someone is talking about electronics.
When someone says "Playstation", you know the someone is talking about videogames.
When someone says "Nintendo", you know the someone is talking about videogames.

"Brand" goes a lot deeper than that, but i try to keep it as simple as possible.

Playstaion is the stronger brand. My uncle was plaing my PS3 one day and he asked me what the 360 was. My uncle been playing the Playstation since it came out. I guess when you just play one console brand you stay with that one console and don't care to look into other consoles. Sony is the first to sale a console over 100 million. Everyone knows about Playstion.

1) One person like that doesn't make everyone like that

2) Game Boy broke 100 million 1st

3) I know a couple people who doesn't know what a Playstation is but knows what a Wii is

@C_Hollomon: You made a common mistake with the brand loyalty. People don't stick to familiar brands because they are so much better, but because they don't know what the other brands are.

Your uncle didn't ask about Wii, if that is because he already knows what it is?

"OK, lets say Nintendo is a brand, you still cant compare it with PlayStation. Its much older and it has more products. What you can do, is to compare Nintendo's last 4 products and PlayStation's last 4 products, and PlayStation obviously wins. Nintendo is more popular THIS gen, but when it comes to OVERALL. PlayStation stays the strongest."

you cant just cut facts out of the order of things b/c it will prove you wrong

the fact that nintendo has been around so long is all the more reason it is a stronger brand name

you have to just face facts you cant win this argument b/c all you have is your opinion to back you up where as the rest of the world is using facts......

and i hate to be the one to tell you this but opinions can be wrong, sure your allowed to have them and all , but that does not make it right

Yeah, let's just ignore facts. Let's try and be "fair", which really means narrowing things down so that they're favourable to the Playstation brand.

If you want an answer to the question "which is the biggest brand in gaming", you don't start cutting out successful products to make things "fair".

Ok, GBA+GB(GBC uncluded)+DS= 300 million units sold.

These were 4 most succesful nintendo products, and they still cant beat PlayStation's 4 consoles.

You keep trying to tip the statistics in your favor to win an argument. The market grows, and the PlayStation consoles are at a later part in gaming.

Sure, dude, OK, whatever makes you happy
