I was browsing the the top sales for Gameboy Advance games here at VGChartz games, and noticed something that I hadn't really considered before. Sales for Pokemon Ruby / Sapphire and Pokemon Fire Red / Leaf Green are counted together so that Pokemon Ruby / Sapphire has 15.40 million copies sold and Pokemon Fire Red / Leaf Green has 10.49 million copies sold. This makes it look as if they have sold far better than the third place game Pokemon Emerald at 6.34 million copies sold and all of the other games on the system for that matter.
When one looks at sales for these Pokemon games and then looks at the sales for some of the Mario Advance games, for instance, one is led to believe that these Pokemon titles sure are staggeringly more popular than the Mario games on the system. But when you realize that the sales for these Pokemon games are actually reflecting the sales for two games it becomes apparent that the Pokemon games are still more popular than the Mario games but each one is probably just about two million copies more popular rather than 10 million units more popular in the case of Pokemon Ruby / Sapphire or if you halve the number for Fire Red or Leaf Green, each one may not have actually sold any more copies than some of the Mario titles in the Mario Advance line.
Also, having Ruby / Sapphire and Fire Red / Leaf Green grouped together as one game doesn't give any indication as to which version of the games has sold more. It doesn't show if Fire Red has sold many more copies than Leaf Green or vice versa or if each one has sold the same amount. So, I'm wondering should there be individual rather than joint sales numbers for the different versions of these games?
