I've played Infinate Undiscovery just last week (HATED it, I returned it the 2nd day). It had poor graphics, a horrid main character in Crapello, awful gameplay and a dated story. I stopped playing not long after the jail escape in disgust. I played Star Ocean the week before that. I was kind of indifferent, though I never loved the past star ocean games either. It had somewhat decent graphics, almost no special move choices (by the 30s each character only had 2-4 moves to choose from, rediculous), a REALLY REALLY annoying character, possibly the worst ever, in Lymile (I love you Edgie and Ray Ray kay?) and endless hyper easy enemy encounters leading up to take forever uneventful boss fights. I made it through the first disk before I got bored and moved on to other things, kind of par for the star ocean course. I tried Lost Odyssey, it was stilted, poorly designed and just boring. The characters had horrid animation, the graphics were nothing to write home about, the split between immortals and humans was lame (along with the way of acquiring skills from paired humans), the boss fights were cheap and encouraged grinding...There was ONE bright spot, the text stories you found from time to time, they were well written and engaging unlike the ponderous LO dialogue. I wish I hadn't lost 10 hours of my time trying that game. Blue Dragon was really really trite and boring. It didn't help that it looked like it was designed for 8 year olds with the dragon ball Z graphics. In addition the battles were simplistic and boring even by 1997 standards (when other JRPGs like Legend of the Dragoon and later Shadow Hearts were expanding to more involved battles). The characters were poorly designed and not really likable and the story was again, pretty awful. The 6s and 7 it got were overly generous Eternal Sonata wasn't too bad, a solid 8 or so, it had good graphics, a pretty decent semi real time combat system and an interesting concept. The story went off the rails a bit near the end, but overall it was a good game with a great soundtrack. It is also on the PS3, so can't be counted as a feather in the 360's cap anymore. Enchanted Arms was also ported, though it doesn't matter, because it was awful. I haven't tried Last Remnant to be Honest, I've heard such bad things that I really didn't want to waste even the 5 dollars on the rental. The only game that was good on the 360 was Tales of Vesperia; the combat was fun, the story was not great but passable and the graphics were good enough. It was great for a 360 RPG but probably would have been lost in the pack on the PS2 (like the Tales series often was). though even that game was nowhere near as good as Valk Chronicles, so on one of the few decent exclusives it still goes advantage PS3 in comparison. IMO Valk Chronicles is the only JRPG of this gen that could really stand on its own compared with the many awesome PS2 JRPGs. It had great art direction, great story, engaging characters and setting...everything. I may have missed one or two JRPGs here and there (other then last Remnant) but I'm pretty sure I've played all the "must play 360 JRPGS" and they've been found wanting. The three best JRPGs of the last 3 years are without a doubt Persona 3, Persona 4 and Valk Chronicles. If I was going to add a 4th I'd toss in Disgaea 3 before I'd go over to Tales. I don't know why anyone doubts that one can play these 360 RPGs and not like them, none of the review community did, so why is there this expectation that all players should? I've played at least 500 RPGs over the last 22 years and none of the 360 RPGs are even in the top 100 (either in my personal estimation or in reviews given by review outlets). In quantity, yes, the 360 is way out ahead, but does that really matter if the PS2 era quality isn't there? I'd trade all the 360 RPGs for one Dark Cloud 2 or Shadow Hearts Covenant or hell, even a Kingdom Hearts or Front Mission. Feel free to check my gamercard, Impulsivity, I have all the games on my played list except for Star Ocean which was lost when I switched consoles last week and had to recover my gamercard (which apparently isn't updated daily when it comes to recovery). I can answer more questions about the gameplay/plot if you don't believe me on that one. |
The only JRPG on the ps3 I like is Valk Chronicles so I guess we are totally oposites. I don't think this gen has been very kind to many JRPG's when it comes to reviews not just the 360 but also on the PS3. Just go look at Metacritic and you will see. I wasn't saying that the lineup on the 360 is the endall beall but to me it is scores better than the ps3's, and I still haven't gotten to play SO4.
