Funny, I thought the PS3 had actually been ahead of the Wii for the following three weeks after two medium sized PS3 hits came out.  It was one rather average jrpg from Level-5 that had them closely competing with the Wii in the earlier part of the year.  And apparently the game the Japanese are loving the most right now is Demon Souls on PS3.

NIntendo are toying with Sony in Japan. It is the calm before the storm. Nintendo have something big on the horizon for 2009 for Wii in Japan coming very soon. Just you wait and see people.

Anyway Wii may not outsell PS3 by 3 to 1 in Japan region in 2009 - it could be 2 to 1 in favour of Wii. So the competition improves in comparison to the Wii. Big deal, last time I checked in Japan region Wii has a 5 million lead over PS3 in total Wii console ltd sales. 8 million Wiis sold compared to only 3 million PS3s sold in 2.25 years.

First of all, Level 5 is actually pretty big in Japan. Second, RE5, Yakuza 3, and SF4 also came out and RE5 and Yakuza are big releases.

This. Not only that but we're talking about total sales for the year and not cherry picking specific weeks. It's going to take a lot more than a few weeks of outselling the Wii be a few thousand units for the PS3 to beat the Wii for the year.

I don't think it's out of the question.

The PS3 would need a price cut there,FFXIII this year,and a number of exclusives to do it.
But,I think the odds are not in the ps3's favor mainly because of MH and DQIX.

I think it's possible for it to outsell the wii for total 2009 only if nothing "system-selling" releases for wii this year. It not a very good probability though. Ps3 seems to finally be hitting a better pace in JP and has had some good releases. If I were sony, I'd cut the price in JP only. At least, the currency fluctuations don't work against them there

@Pristine: But the thing is, that currently PS3 is doing exceptionally good in Japan and Wii doing exceptionally bad at the same time.

As for the pricecut, if Sony cuts the price to sell the product at even more loss, at the same time it's sacking staff, may cause some serious issues with the union.
