One thing is for sure: even if Wii still manages to outsell PS3 on 2009, PS3 will win any following year.
DQX will most likely come out mid 2011 date by when Wii will be already forgotten, and Monster Hunter on a console is no more system seller than Pokemon Stadium.
Who said about not seeing Wii Sports Resort as a system seller? The idea of WSR isn't the game itself, but Wii Motion Plus. Its release is similar to Wii Fit release, as more like a new platform inside a platform. And it's also quite possible that japanese market waits for the WM+ release (and games for it). That we'll see after the peripheral is out.
It's also interesting, that the "New Play Control" games didn't push the hardware sales in Japan, but then again, if the games had originally been system sellers, GC would've done better than it did.

So, I'll admit that I don't follow the Monster Hunter series very closely.
Heavens to Murgatoids.
Can it outsell it for a week? Sure
Can it outsell it for a month? Probably
Can it outsell it for a year? Doubtful, but possible
Can it outsell it lifetime? No chance in hell.
The Wii already has *5m* lead in Japan - 8m to 3m. If the Wii stopped selling tomorrow, it would take the PS3 almost 4 years just to catch up.

@Axumblade: WSR/WM+ bundle will sell well without a doubt, but as we know, every big seller tends to push the hardware sales up aswell (though, the question remains how long and how much).
As we know, WM+ brings, literally, a new dimension into the gameplay and Nintendo still is the only one of the three bringing such a control method. If WM+ lives up to expectations and gets supported by games (every 1st party game released after WM+ is expected to support the feature), it could easilly pull the demand back to first year levels, or not, but that's a lot of guesswork. There's also the possibility of Wii Remotes getting WM+ as a standard function, when there wouldn't be a need for the peripheral, which also could work as a system seller, in a sense that Wii would have "full" functionality out of the box.
But, who knows what'll happen, personally i see WM+ as a system seller after the games for it start to pop out.

It's my belief that if a couple of systems start out with one of them having a terrific burst, but the other system survives and continues to sell better, and they reach a place where they are selling about equally, then the system that started out slower can find itself still getting good games that will let it be competitive and maybe even dominant over the first console for the rest of the gen. Look at how PSP and DS are doing against each other now.

^^DS vs PSP is not even a match. I mean its like a race in which the first place runner overlapped the 2nd place runner so many times that now it doesn't even matter. The DS ain't lapping psp anymore, but does it really need to? It's already leaped right over the ps2's lifetime installed base in that country.
As for the OP, no way. With the huge game releases the ps3 has received compared to the meager releases the Wii has had, I'd thought the ps3 would have performed better than it has. Plus most of ps3's games are extremely front loaded.
I'm rather surprised that some ppl think that the Wii's big hitters won't do better saleswise than the ps3's considering Wii's installed base is 5 million stronger. We'll see I suppose, but I find it rather shocking some ppl think the ps3 has a shot as outselling the Wii this year in Japan.
Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:
If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.
If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.
@Axumblade: Well, it really doesn't matter who is buying the consoles, as long as people buy it. In WM+ i was thinking the more avid gamers would be most interested in it, but as i said, we'll see about it.
As for RS2 and CoD, this is Japan we're talking about. If WM+ pulls japanese gamers into the type of games, then you could say it has done practically a miracle.
