In reponse to the latest February NPD game / hardware sales figures for the US, Microsoft has commented on "formerly Sony-exclusive series'" expecting them to sell more on the Xbox 360 in the future. This includes the recently released Resident Evil 5 as well as Final Fantasy XIII.

This is a bold statement considering Final Fantasy is biggest in Japan and is still PlayStation 3 exclusive in that region.

Looking at previous data for Final Fantasy XII, the game launched with three times as many copies sold in comparison to the US release. Only the release will tell, but their comment is more likely to antagonise than anything else.

Is it possible Microsoft has secured a Japanese release for the 360 version? Because that's the only way I can see their claim being realised.

(Maybe they were just talking about US sales, but outselling the PS3 version there is a given, so I guess not).

Obviously they are talking about NA only as it is their respond to NPD sales figures.

The sales from the Japan version for the PS3 will outsell the Xbox 360s version WW.

Even if there talking about America vs America, the PS3 will more then likely still take it even though the userbase of the X360 is double that of the PS3.

If it were to be released in Japan on the 360, it would most likely be after the PS3 version, so it wouldn't matter that much in moving new 360's in Japan and it wouldn't sell any better in Japan in comparison to the PS3 version than SF4 or RE5. The best it could do for them would be maybe keep the PS3 from selling as much there as it would as an exclusive. The split would be about 750,000 in favor of the PS3 version and 250,000 for the 360 version.

Now, if MS was to do the totally unexpected at this point and bring out their version of FFXIII before the PS3 version in Japan. They could get a big boost from that and for their console. They might sell 500,000 new 360's and 500,000 copies of the game halving what I expect the PS3 version to do.

But how would the Japanese game community view such an action? Would they embrace it on the 360 or would they rebel even more against Square as a result?

It's just PR-talk, don't take it to serious.

I don't think Sony would allow something like that to happen, Microsoft already took the exclusivity of it away in PAL and America, but if they came out in Japan as well before the PS3 version then that'd be pretty bad.

Also your numbers are way to low. Final Fantasy XIII will sell minimum 1.5 million first week in Japan, and maximum 2 million on the PS3. But even if it sells that much I only expect about 150K PS3's sold that week in Japan.

Now if it came out on the Xbox 360 first it'd probably be, 350K sold first week for the Xbox 360 and maybe 70K Xbox 360's sold that first week and if PS3 version came after that it'll still sell over a million first week.

Maybe MS plans on bundling the game with every single 360 sold WW. 

Or buying a bunch of copies and just storing them in a warehouse. =P
