Forums - Gaming - Do JRPG Fans Want Complex Plots In Their Games?

What makes a good plot? Sould it be filled with plot twist? Should it be a storyline that focues more on the characters? Should it be a complex plot thats well told and understandable? Does pacing determine if a rpg's storyline can keep the interest of the player?

Whats your thought?

Yes to all of the above.

I'm out before this is spoiler-bombed.

I don't mind if the plot is simple (in fact, it may be preferable), as long as the characters come across. A "WTF!" plot twist is great and all, but you can only be surprised the first time you're playing through the game, and ultimately it's the characters that I'll remember most.

Good plot- Sticking to the actual main story and progressing with the game.

Bad Plot- Filling it in with a lot of long unnecessary story telling and long winded cut scenes that seem to be directed towards insecure teens.

I can enjoy both.
Simple plots like in FF, complex like in the Xeno Series.
Heck I even liked DQVIII which has a story on the same complexity level as Mario platformers.

Tempus fugit Nintendo manet.

Yes to all. The more complex the story is (as long as it's well told and understandable, of course) the better. I want tons of plot twists, well developed characters, I enjoy a lot those stories. I'd take anytime a complex story like Xenosaga over a simple one like Tales of Legendia.

I maybe can enjoy more simple stories (it depends), but I usually don't, in the end they bore me

To me the most important part in a jrpg storyline is to have great pacing that always has you tackling something new, alot of plot twist that keeps you guessing, characters you can actually connect with, alot of deep and emotional event, and of course it has to be complex and well thought out.

You are describing Persona 4. Have you played it?

FF has simple stories?  News to me.  FF has been the top dog when it comes to shocking plot twists and revelations since God knows how long.

All I care about in a story is decent pacing, atleast average voice acting, tolerable(if not great) writing, memorable characters, etc.

I wish. I only played Persona 3 which was a great game but it had alot of down time in the storyline. And there were a few plot twist with some being very unexpected like when you find out that by killing all of those full moon monsters you unsealed Nyx and now we are all gonna die. Also when you find out that Nyx was sealed within the main character.
