Do JRPG Fans Want Complex Plots In Their Games?

I don't mind if the plot is simple (in fact, it may be preferable), as long as the characters come across. A "WTF!" plot twist is great and all, but you can only be surprised the first time you're playing through the game, and ultimately it's the characters that I'll remember most.
