In a stunning bit of news, Activision has announced the cancellation of the highly anticipated direct sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which was expected to be released in time for Christmas 2009. Modern Warfare was the top game of 2007, having sold over 11 million copies since its release. In development by Infinity Ward, the sequel was expected to go beyond Modern Warfare and World at War to reach unprecedented levels of first-person-shooter awesomeness.

"We decided to go another direction," explains Mark Rubin, a producer at Infinity Ward. "We carefully studied player behavior in the Modern Warfare and World at War games and decided to expand on some of the most used player strategies. It's better to make a game focused on what players like to do most rather than just recreate the same game over and over again."

After careful study, Infinity Ward discovered that the most popular form of strategic combat was actually happening outside of the normal parameters of game sessions. This behavior included strategic use of exiting the game, especially for game hosts, and timely disconnects of the network cable from the console or computer.

"But we aren't concentrating only on session-ending tactics," Rubin quickly asserts. "We've got a lot of really good surprises. For example, the new game will detect if background music is being picked up by your microphone and will boost the volume level on the voice channel so it can be more of a distraction to other players. We've also implemented highly advanced speech recognition software, and if we detect a player is doing a lot of talking but its all unintelligible garbage, we can enhance the player's tactics by having his nonsense language cause his opponent's screens to shake."

Rubin wouldn't go into much detail on just what all they had planned for Call of Duty: Host Ended Game, but he did hint that some upper level perks would give players the ability to translate annoying habits in the voice channel into actual effects on the battle field.

Two by Two is one such perk. Available at level 44, the perk is initiated by repeating "Two by two, hands of blue" into the mic over and over again. Once the perk is activated, other players within a certain radius of the speaker's avatar will begin bleeding out of their eyes, ears and mouth. And prolonged exposure to the phrase will end in death.

"It is all about letting players fight the way they want to fight," Rubin concluded. "The ability to run around and shoot people was great two years ago, but these days, people want new tactics and they've resorted to the voice channel to use those tactics. We're just trying to enhance the experience!"

That was funny, but dissappointing. I thought your title said they were removing "Host Ended Game" from the new Modern Warfare, which would have been awesome.

April Fools so early? I guess the earlier they come the less funny they are and less believable. I personally stopped at canceled to know it was a fake.
