Forums - Nintendo - Wii sales mindblowing! Just think about it. Wii vs PS2 vs GC

We have started taking the astonishing Wii sales for granted. Every month that NPD report salesnumber for the system of 600-700 k we think of it as normal (I know I do anyway) but I checked some historic facts that made me realize just how fenomenal the console is doing. Some facts WII vs GC and Wii vs PS2 (NPD):

This month (february) Wii sold 753.000 copies in the US. GC has only managed to tie or beat that number for two months in it´s entire lifetime! Both of which were the month of December with holidaysales.

Dec 2003 GC sold 1, 100, 000 copies.

Dec 2004, 810,000 copies.

Small potato if compared with Wii don´t you agree? I know GC was tiny saleswise but I thought it was an interesting comparison anyway.

The story of Wii is perhaps even more impressive if compared with the alltime champ PS2:

Quote : Wii has topped 600,000 units in the USA in every calendar month now except for July and August one or more times since it launched. PS2 never topped 600,000 units in a month outside November and December except for in June 2002 when Sony dropped the PS2 price to $200 from $300 : End of quote

Enough about my rant but I think it´s exciting times. We´re clearly witnessing history in the making. A few years back I would never had thought that PS2 would be threatened saleswise by another homeconsole ever (if not by another Sony console) and I´d never thought Nintendo would be back on top. How things change.

I know the question have been brought up before but what do you think, will Wii eventually outsell PS2?

What's more pressing is the need for the Wii's upcoming hits (e.g. MH3 in Japan, Wii Sports Resort) to have an even greater impact on sales than usual, so as to sustain a 100K per week sales gap between it and its competitors combined. That way it can finally overcome that 2.26 mill gap.

Jup, anyone who thinks Wii won't sell more then 100 million is a bad analyst!

Gamecube sold good enough, but in comparison miserable!

PS2 is crazy good, but Wii comes by and kicks the shit out of it! No one would've believed it back in 2006!

It really depends on how long its active. If they pull it out before it reaches 140 million then no it won't. Nintendo likes to make people move on to the new stuff faster.

No, Nintendo likes to support their platforms as long as possible. The GBA was delayed repeatedly because the GBC was selling so well. Nintendo supports their platforms as long as consumers do.

I also read that sidenote from TheSource, and it too put Wii's tremendous sales into perspective. It will undoubtedly outsell the PS2. Coming up on three yrs and it hasn't received a single pricecut. Where the source mentions the only time the PS2 reached "Wii like sales" lol was after a 100$ one. Insane.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Yes that´s most impressive. I don´t think all realize just how great Wii is doing. Naturally PS2 is still the alltime champ and has had amazing longevity, however Wii is doing numbers that are unmatched in the history of videogaming.

And how long can Wii do those numbers and not break records?

I am with Darc on this one.  Nintendo does not like to move people on to new stuff if they don't have to.  They like to milk platforms with minor changes to draw out it's life as long as possible.  Look at the DS, basically the same thing for 3 models to stretch it out.  Same thing with consoles, they will try to milk the market with colors, or other minor updates.  Consoles are the same for Nintendo, it's just that sometimes the competition doesn't let them stay with the same model as long...  Right now, that is far from an issue with the Wii...
