Me saying the PS3 can't beat the 360 isn't just a wld guess or because I think the games will make the difference, it's just looking at the numbers.

If the PS3 dropped price tomorrow and suddenly became such a selling machine that it outsold the 360 by 100k per month, it would take more than 6 1/2 years for the PS3 to just catch up to the 360.

In order to just catch up to 360 in a reasonable amount of time, say two years, the PS3 would have to OUTSELL (not just sell) the 360 more than 350k per month for two straight years.

So yeah...

Of course, that assumes that the X360 will still be on the market for as long as the PS3.  That would be incorrect.  MS said the X360 might be on the market for 7 years.  The PS3 lifecycle has been announced as 9 ot 10 years.  That's a 2 to 3 year period with NO X360.  Now, at 2.3 million consoles per quarter, how long would it take to make up 7 to 8 million console sales?  Here's a hint: it's nowhere near 6 years.  Hell, it's nowhere near 2 years!

This just requires below average math skills to figure out.

MS said that the Xbox 360 would be on the market for the same length of time as the PS3 (+ one day)

Tease.

Yeah, I think 360 too. I really just don't see how the PS3 will be able to catch up at this point.

Microsoft's mission statement this gen is to specifically sell more units than the PS3. Microsoft's success, as stated, revolves around the failure of Sony with no exception.

If MS has to give their consoles away for free, they will do it if it makes them sell more units than the PS3. I'm very serious when I say this.

I could see this happening in Japan.  There, people don't want a 360 unless they really have to.  The Japanese view of the 360 = American view of the PS3.  Plain and simple.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

@twesterm

while you have assumed the ps3 price cut would cause it to sell high n it would need to sell 100k more units then the 360, you have to factor in other causes:

PS3 price cut, increase in sales would eat into 360 sales.

-SONY finally getting a footing in japan.

-Big releases on ps3, FF,GT..

The PS3 can catch up to the 360.. but right now SONY just wants to make a profit in the gaming division. Pride can wait for the next gen.

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

5 THINGS I'd like to see before i knock out:

b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"

c. redesgined PS controller

d. SEGA back in the console business

e. M$ out of the OS business

ps3 will be @ 3rd place but the gap won't be as big as how the ps2 and xbox was last gen.

yeah but i doubt 2.3 million people each quarter are going to be buying the PS3s when theres something better out there. Hell the PS4 will prolly be out in that time so the PS3 will be much like the PS2 is now

Long Live SHIO!

Could go either way. The PS3 may last longer due to the fact that Sony is likely to be more cautious about releasing a successor than Microsoft, but the 360 definately has the advantage at the moment.

Considering the ps3 is actually down yoy and the 360 is up yoy I wouldn't be surprised if the ps3 stops selling before the 360 does. Although they'll probably bow out of the market at the same time.

I think the 360 will get slightly higher sales but they will be so close that it won't matter which came second or third.
