Forums - Sony - Things Sony can strip from the PS3 to help lower the price

Hmm, how about use an external power supply. You can simplify the packaging of the ps3 to make it smaller and cheaper cooling solution overall. It doesn't make sense to strip the bluray playback since the most of the money for that goes back to sony anyways. Of course getting better yields on the cell processor or RSX on a smaller die would help.

As you can see from my post above yours, I agree that the PSU should be external;

Sure, genius.. Add an additional case for the external PSU, an additional pcb for it and an additional cable/connector. This will surely decrease the costs... Note the words: "additional" that might give your brain a clue. Why do you think the new, cheaper PS2 has an integrated PSU?

What pissed on your chips? There was no need for the rudeness.

Having an external PSU allows for reductions in the size of the heating supply (and the amount of energy it requires), it will also allow for the PS3's casing to be decreased, which can mean smaller packaging, and lower transportation costs.

Having fewer parts doesn't necessarily make it cheaper.  If say Sony were to use the same power supply as what the Xbox 360 uses, Sony might get a lower price because the maker of the power supply would just make more of the same and everyone enjoys reduced cost due to economy of scale and outsourcing.

As you can see from my post above yours, I agree that the PSU should be external; but better yields on a smaller die costs a lot in terms of R&D, funds that Sony don't really have.

The only hope, really, is for IBM to get the Cell on a smaller chip, and nVidia for the graphics chip.

Yeah, I didn't see or read your post before I posted.  I prefer to have it built in power supply from an aesthetic point of view.  But even die shrinks would only improve cost minimally(~$30).  Hopefully the die shrink will lower power usage = smaller power supply and smaller cooling solution maybe save some $ there.  Personally if Sony was to rerelease the PS3 with a new slick smaller external case (external ps?) even at the same $399 price might drive sales right now.  I'd go with PS3 slim ;)

lol all you want....butwithout the SONY brand/PS3 brand........PS3 would've absolutely bombed at $600

This. Heck Gamecube lifetime sales are soon to be surpassed. A 600$ launch versus a 199$ launch

oh dear. what a cheap attempt at wit

The wi-fi was part of the reason i went for PS3 as I'm not running a cable through the length of my house.

Wi-Fi is fine for surfing the internet; for on-line gaming it doesn't come close.  There are other alternatives to running cables though.

lol please stop misleading people .I can play online via wi-fi with ease or even host . my ps3 isnt near a router so ihave no choice.

sony wont take out wi fi it dont cost that much,
the PS3 is striped down enough

VITA 32 GIG CARD.250 GIG SLIM & 160 GIG PHAT PS3

Exactly what we needed another banging of heads by everyman and their pet dog thinking they can solve the ps3 "problem".

Here's an idea ditch the ps3's current model, sellotape a ps2 and a blu-ray play together and call that the ps3.

Because way I see it, people moaned about ps2BC being kicked out (yet same folks are looking for more things to remove) and that the ps3 is nothing but a glorified blu-ray player so putting the two together should solve the problem...ma'rite?

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.
