Things Sony can strip from the PS3 to help lower the price

Sure, genius.. Add an additional case for the external PSU, an additional pcb for it and an additional cable/connector. This will surely decrease the costs... Note the words: "additional" that might give your brain a clue. Why do you think the new, cheaper PS2 has an integrated PSU?

Having an external PSU allows for reductions in the size of the heating supply (and the amount of energy it requires), it will also allow for the PS3's casing to be decreased, which can mean smaller packaging, and lower transportation costs.
