Forums - Nintendo - Why is the Wii getting so few games weekly in Japan?

@mike: My second post has the games at least Wii is getting. And it's not very encouraging at all. PS2 saw a lot more games at this point of its lifetime, Wii should be there. Yeah devs were caught off-guard, but still, it's been 2 years now snce it's been accepted that Wii was going to win this gen, yet they are still doubtful. I accept the appologies, but that kind of posting incites people like Rol to come and focus on attacking me.

It's been a strange gen so far, Wii has been treated as a third place console. A lot of things lead to this, mailny the devs betting on the HD consoles, devs thinking Wii was going to fail because of the GC, and devs not giving up on PS2 development. Also the increased popularity of the handhelds and devs that did bet on the HD consoles moving away directly to the handhelds, instead of the Wii. Plus a long SW drought from Nintendo.

All adds up to the current bad situation of the Wii. If it was to be reversed, it would be after Q2, because for the upcoming months the situation is the same as it has been for the past 6 months.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

@bardic: Lol this isnt a Nintendo has betrayed me post. WTH?

You have the bleakest view of the Wii for a Nintendo fan, lots of gloom with your relationship with Nintendo =)

@TresTres: There's a reason why people act like you're irrational. But still, against all odds, you did have a point with the games releases.

Anyway, since you're calling out for quality, what quality releases PS2 is still getting? Switching to Wii developement isn't free and since PS2 has a huge installbase, the games put on the platform may prove out to be slow burners that stack up to decent sales.
Also, without WiiWare, XBLA and PSN, the number of games on the current gen systems would propably be higher (i assume you count in only the boxed titles). And since handhelds are the primary market in Japan these days, home consoles get treated like a stepson, unlike when last gen started, with the devs not having a real need to jump into the current gen.

Oh, and i don't see Wii having any trouble in relation to current gen consoles, since its releases equal combined PS360 releases in the same timeframe.

I did not see the breakdown initially. I tried to go to the site in the OP but I could not understand it.

I agree that the mix is not great and that the treatment is somewhat poor. But I think it speaks more to this console generation than the Wii specifically. Development is being done for the handhelds. After all, the PS3 and Xbox 360 are not getting that many games.  Additionally, I think that Nintendo and some third-parties are waiting for WM+ because they want their new games to incorporate the improved technology.

By the way, would it be possible to get a breakdown by game type for the other consoles?  That may strengthen your arguement, especially if the Xbox 360 and PS3 are getting high-end titles whie the Wii gets more mini-games.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

By the way, if you add up the numbers:

PS2 -- 28
Wii -- 27
Xbox 360 -- 16
PS3 -- 12

Or PS2 = Xbox 360 + PS3
And Wii ~ Xbox 360 + PS3

Much ado about nothing or a mountain out of a molehill -- take your pick.

good post

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)

Wii: 10^8
