Forums - PC Discussion - 10 reason half life 2 is one of the best games ever

So is DOOM so is Quake so is Killzone so is anything "hardcore." In fact, FPS as a genre doesn't exist.

Maybe you didn't read this paragraph in my first post

"When you are talking about genres, it is mainly a matter of perspective.  For example: We typically refer to games that have complicated character stats and experince systems as a Role Playing Game (RPG).  However, in almost every game you play you are playing the role of somebody.  Therefore, Call of Duty 4 is a Role Playing Game.  So is Grand Theft Auto.  In Quake III, I decide that going up high is not wise as it is more likely I will be killed.  I can now call Quake III a strategy game."

HL2 has you firing guns in first person, therefore it is an FPS.  You are having an "adventure", therefore it is an adventure game and therefore an FPA.  You are playing the role of Dr. Freeman, so it is an RPG, specifically a Western RPG (WRPG).  You solve physics puzzles, therefore it is a puzzle game.  You use strategies such as to defeat your enemies such as "pop out and shoot", therefore it is an RTS.  But wait! You can pause the game and then make your strategic decisions.  Therefore, it is also a turn-based strategy (TBS).

One of the points I am making is that gaming genres are loosly defined.  We use them to describe a game when talking to someone else about it.  You say the game emphasizes shooting, and therefore call it an FPS.  I say it is more of an adventure over killing things, and therefore would call it an FPA.  There really is no wrong answer.  I really just kept arguing with you because I was bored

The gravity gun is a great weapon for more realistic purposes, not like those science-fiction ones which are overpowered from their size

                                       That's Gordon Freeman in "Real-Life"

A lot of people haven't played half-life 2?

Thats pretty laughable. Its sales have been huge!

Just going by vgchartz numbers. Its sold 4.13 million on the pc (which is an out of date number, it doesn't include steam sales either), 0.62 million on the xbox, 1.05 on teh 360 via the orange box, 0.22 on the ps3 version of the orange box. No pc numbers on the orange box are given.

Overall the games sold according to this website has sold 6.02 million copies (this includes packs that have other games in it aswell, specifically the orange box). Whilst some people (like myself) bought half-life 2 and the orange box aswell (thus decreasing how many individuals have played the game) thats still a lot of people. Overall the game has sold a lot more then that as the pc retail sales are out of date and it doesn't include steam sales and the retail pc orange box sales.

So the assumption that it hasn't been played by a lot of people is wrong and yes it is one of the greatest games ever released (let alone the episodes!).

I enjoyed HL2 but I always kept getting that feeling that I was just playing another FPS and I just didn't care for it. But I did enjoy Episode 2 alot though.

My #1 reason. The FPS genre has not moved forward since HL......save for Portal.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.
