Forums - Sales - Will the Wii ever outsell the PSP in Japan?

Yes, the Wii will pass the PSP in Japan.

Align their launches and see for yourself:

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii&reg1=Japan&cons2=PSP&reg2=Japan&cons3=PSP&reg3=Japan&weeks=225

If the PSP were to win, then the PSP would have to sell this well forever, and the Wii would have to have this drought forever. Both are possible, but I highly doubt that's what will happen.

I don't get it, what are you guys debating about? This chart alone is a perfect example that the Wii IS constantly outselling the PSP.

You can choose any number of weeks, and until that time, Wii sold better than PSP.

The two lines are just not crosing each other, and unless you expect some very drastic DEUS EX MACHINA, they won't ever cross each other.

Well yeah, enough of my dark view, I'll just wait and see. I'm sure the new fiscal year will bring news with it.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

I dont think a console will ever outsell a handheld in japan anytime in the near future. Sure the Wii may have a good shot at it... but the culture seems to skew to the portable/social gaming experiences. Maybe we're seeing a huge paradigm shift for gaming in japan.

Smashchu2: Thank you for having a respectful argument. If I seemed rude either, I'm sorry. Unfortunately your friend here doesn't share the same idea.

Atma: So if the PSP has been out longer, why is it still selling so much more? You could argue that the Wii will still be selling after the PSP is nearly dead, but that wouldn't matter much. The gap will get bigger and bigger before that, and by that time, the Wii's sales will likely be too low to close the gap. As for Crisis Core and Gundam, they're only small parts of the why the PSP's hardware is selling so well. Heck, the PSP just got a big boost in Japan. Was it from new colors, or the game that you so love to claim is responsible for EVERYTHING? My comparison was not ridiculous. The same thing could be said with Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and hell, another RPG, FINAL FANTASY. The best selling Final Fantasy game on a handheld is Final Fantasy III, which sold 2.27 million on the DS. Compare that to 9.72 million for Final Fantasy 7 and you start to wonder. And while you say that RPGs are the best selling games for both consoles and handhelds, that doesn't seem to be true for the Wii. Its best selling RPG in Japan is Super Paper Mario at about 580k (if you even call that game an RPG, what a disappointment).

First of all I completely agree with Smashchu2.

Now, if I follow your logic PSP sales will always be > than Wii sales? If you take a look at numbers, the main reason why PSP got a boost in Japan is MH or maybe you prefer to believe it's a coincidence that the boost started the same week of MH release date? Now you're saying that your comparison was not ridiculous by making another even more ridiculous comparison : comparing a remake (FFIII) with the best selling FF. What's your point BTW? Finally the reason why the Wii is so low actually is precisely because there wasnt any big RPG released on this platform. MH3 and DQX are among the biggest franchises in that genre. Plus games like Wii Sports Resort and upcoming big 1st party titles can also give HUGE boost to the console and outsell PSP in the long run.

@Soriku: Oh yeah forgot about SW3. That's definitely going to move consoles.

Look, WSR could go either way. I'm sure it will sell A LOT, but after Wii Music I'm doubtful. It will most probably sell a lot though.

Tales of Ten can also go either way, saying this because Tales of Heart performance on the DS, it was a mothership title but didnt sell as good as it should.

MH3 obviously is going to sell a crapload UNLESS Capcom announces tht MHP3 is coming, since there will be no need for MH fans to buy a Wii in order to play it.

FFCC:CB the previous games weren't that big. I doubt it will shift a lot of consoles.

The rest are new IPs from small devs, and they could build up a nice fanbase, but I don't think they will move consoles.

As for Zelda and Mario, of course, they are going to move consoles, but not as much as DQX or MH3 since they have already been released on the Wii and the fanbase is there.

The rest of the small IPs from the Nintendo conference are a good constant flow of games, although they will not give boost up the Wii significantly, let alone sell any significant amount of copies.

The Level 5 RPG's aren't confirmed are they?

Yes they are.

And the PSP would have to seriously fall if the Wii were too pass it. The PSP has gone under quite a renassiance.

ok then but lets not forget some things

1.dragon quest 7 was released for the psone in 2000 when the ps2 was already released and the psone had sold more than 17mln consoles

2.dragon quest 8 was released for the ps2 in 2004 when the ps2 had already sold around 17mln consoles

3.and now dragon quest 9 launches on ds in 2009 when ds has sold more than 25mln consoles

while i can understand a big boost in sales....i dont see it as a system seller since the series has been released when platforms had already been old and had already sold the majority of their life-time sales................

Right, and MH2G was released for the PSP in 2008 when the PSP had already sold 10 mln consoles (majority of its life-time sales) and it was definitly a system seller.

So yes we can affirm that DQ is a system seller.

I THINK i didnt make myself clear.i am not talking about monster hunter portable releases,i am talking about past home consoles releases of dragon quest games...........also you dont know that 10mln is the majority sales of psp let alone the fact that monster hunter 2g was released 3.5 years after the release of the psp,and dqx will be released almost 5 years AFTER WII LAUNCH!!!thats a difference........

Let me give you some facts :

10 mln IS the majority of PSP sales in Japan considering it is obvious that it won't ever reach 20 mln.

MH2G was released 3¼ years after PSP launch as for DQX we don't know when it will be release but 5 years would mean it will release in late 2011 or early 2012 which is hard to believe. Let's say that it will release in late 2010 or early 2011, which is more realistic, that make 4 years after Wii launch. So the difference is only a year...

That said, knowing how huge DQ is in Japan, you must be very naive to believe it won't push HW sales.

@NIKOS_SE

And your point? The age of the console deson't make a bit of diffrence-software sells and that's as simple as it gets, and when a console is getting the japanese equivelent of halo, smash and madden wrapped into ONE in terms of popularity, you'd be hard pressed not to find a Japanese gamer who buys a wii just on that impulse alone.

*Gratuitous falme-bait signature that mocks two or more consoles while praising another*

Dragon Quest is one of the biggest franchises in Japan. In fact, the biggest RPG franchise aside from Pokemon.

I doubt DQX wouldn't push the Wii Sales. It's very likely it'll be a system seller. But eh, I can be wrong though.
