Forums - Nintendo - Wii in 2009 vs Wii in 2008, a tribute to Crazzyman.

Maybe Nintendo really doesn't care for monstruous sales, as long as they are making a healthy profit with each Wii, but they will have to hand out some serious explanations to the shareholders about why Wii isn't on track to reach those projections they made this March. In the first quarter, Wii is down as much as 50% from last fiscal year's 1st quarter. They either lower the forecast by some millions or they do something fast, because shares will start to get sold once the news hit the street after the quarterly report appears next week.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Wii is not going to reach 60 million this year. In 2010, the 360 might start to outsell it even.

They would cut the price LONG before that happened.

Maybe not. Nintendo may not actually care.

It costs them more money per Wii to produce fewer Wiis at the current level of capacity than it would to produce them at close to their maximum manufacturing capacity. They built up a lot of production, I don't see them wasting it the year after they built it.

Fair point.

This is going to be a very, very interesting year.

Yay! Does that mean that we can be friends on VGC?

Tease.

Yes, production was said to be about 2.4 million/month, and during this last 3 months, only 2.67 million Wii's were sold according to VGC, which means that there are about 4.5 million Wii's sitting at their warehouses.

We will properly see how many Wii's Nintendo shipped this quarter next week, when their fiscal report comes out, but if they really shipped less than 3 million, then they will need to shut down some factories.

the trouble trestres is that they need the supply for the holiday, if there are planning a price cut its good for them to have stockpile of wii's as although that will be costly and inefficient at the present they will have enogh stock to take full advantage of a holiday price cut

Wii is DOWN 2,636,724 units from 2008!  =(

Note: As a side note, Nintendo has released their updated projetions for the FY and they still remain the same: 26 million Wii's from April 2009 to March 2010. The problem lies in that from Apr 1st 2008 to July 25th 2008, there were 6,892,363 sold, while from Apr 1st 2009 to July 25th 2009 there were 3,451,068 sold. This means that the Wii is down almost 3.5 million units or 50% from last year. Adding that to the fact that Wii is still losing about 200k - 150k consoles YoY weekly, the YoY gap is growing instead of shrinking because of it, so I honestly see no way by which the Wii can be able to reach the same numbers it reached last fiscal year. How is that 3.5 million deficit going to be reversed and how are the weekly YoY numbers going to become positive instead of negative? They should have lowered the forecasts, because 26 million won't happen or anything close to it.

Note: Wii is up again YoY, but it looks like there has been an upwards adjustment for the Wii.

Note: Wii is down YoY again. The difference this week is small, but only because Wii was adjusted up again this week. By next week, it will begin to slip yet once again considering that the boosts given by MH3 and Wii Sports Resort are already disappearing.

Wii is DOWN 2,602,257 units from 2008!  =(

Note: The Wii will probably plateau at 200k-220k/week for a month now that the MH3 boost is starting to wear off in Japan and that there are no big releases coming up until October for any region. During this following month Wii sales will be down about 100-120k weekly YoY, as Wii sold 330k/week on average at this same time last year. This makes it even more difficult for Nintendo to reach those projections.
