Forums - Sales - Why the PSP Will Reach the 100 Million Units Sold Milestone! ~ BELIE3VE!

The PSP reached the 50 million units sold milestone in about four years. While an amazing feat, Sony may be a little disappointed that it didn't reach that goal earlier. Fortunately, Sony has plenty of time to make up ground since the PSP will still be on the market for the foreseeable future. Here are a few reasons why the PSP will sell another 50 million units, for a total of 100 million units, before it gets discontinued.

New Models

The successor to the PSP won't be coming anytime soon. Sony would rather release a new model than to spend extra money building and advertising a new handheld video game system.

Already with three different models, the PSP will continue to evolve. The latest rumors have Sony dropping the UMD drive of the PSP and going with digital distribution. Not to mention that Nintendo is giving the same treatment to the Nintendo DS and is also in no hurry in creating their next handheld system. Thus, expect the PSP to be on the market for years to come, giving it enough time to sell 100 million units.

Mass Market Price

The PSP managed to make it past the 50 million units sold threshold in spite of launching at the price of $249.99. Even with several price drops, the PSP is still deemed a little too expensive at $169.99.

Once the PSP gets below $100, it will reach the mainstream mass market price point for handheld gaming systems. Expect sales for the PSP to take off soon afterwards. It should take the PSP a much shorter time to sell another 50 million units thanks to the inevitable price drops.

Sony's Experience

The original Playstation sold over 100 million units while the Playstation 2 sold over 150 million units. Although Sony may not be what they once were, it is hard to argue against their past success and experience with video game systems. Due to Sony's ability to continually extend the life of their video game systems, the PSP should be alive and well for the foreseeable future.

Exclusive Games

Currently, the PSP only has a handful of worthwhile exclusive games, especially when compared to the Nintendo DS. The future is looking very bright for Sony's first handheld system, however. Dissidia: Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, LittleBigPlanet and Rock Band Unplugged are just a few of the exclusive titles that are heading to the PSP soon. Once the PSP library is filled these excellent exclusive games, sales for the system will increase tremendously.

You should be beaten, burned to ashes then someone should throw your ashes from a plane

56 millions to go!!

XD that was supposed to be 54 !!!!!!!!

I think with the way things are going right now there is a good chance. Just look at how well it is selling with a minimal amount of games... once the big guns hit, fogettaboutit!

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

as much as i want to believe this I don't. I might be wrong but I think sales of psp are starting to drop now and in the UK quite a few stores don't sell psp games anymore or just have a small space for them. It could get a revival this year but i don't think so.

I don't know about 100mil, but I'll sure be impressed if they can hit 75mil.

No. They'll have to introduce PSP2 by then. Its gonna take a hell a long time for it to hit 100mill at by the time its close DS2 will be out.

PSP isnt taken seriously anymore. Its too late. Masses buy it as a media system and a majority of gamers dont want it or play it.

Btw dont make a ridiculous list either because its just as easy to make a DS list that doubles it.

This is why I feel Sony will somehow pull out a win in this generation. Best fanbase ever.
